| Re: BMW pushing the Bus? (don't look Chain) Don't get me wrong, it's going to prove a superb machine I'm sure, but it isn't gonna take the horsepower/acceleration/top speed titles away from my beloved Suzook anytime soon.
The Bimmer's a whopping 615 pounds DRY (my busa is 560 fully loaded with battery and fuel), makes less torque and horsepower, and has been top speed tested to 169 mph. Hell, my 954 would run with it on the big end.
Besides, the bastard costs upwards of 18G fully decked and, importantly, it's not made in Japan where the most refined two-wheelers in all the world are designed and produced! |

According to BMW, the 1157cc responsible for such haste sends 167 horsepower to its crankshaft at 10,250 rpm. I'll wait for the dyno and dragstrip numbers to know for sure, but according to the seat of my pants, it wont thump Suzuki's 1298cc Hayabusa or Kawasaki's 1199cc ZX-12R. In terms of elegance, distinctiveness and sheer technological grandeur, though, this BMW is in a class by itself. ( quoting Motorcyclist's Tim Carrithers)
| The article goes on to state that BMW *claims* 547 lbs wet and 96 ft lbs of torque.
Me likey. |

15,500 for the non-ABS and non-ESA model but for the extra dough the Electronic Suspension Adjustment sounds really cool (and BMW's ABS has always been among the best around). Quoting Motorcyclist again: Quote: |
All the new bikes at the Munich launch came with BMW's new Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) that lets you choose one of the nine preprogrammed spring/damping configurations via a button on the left handlebar. First cue up the appropriate icon in the cockpit's LCD display--solo, solo with luggage or two up with luggage --to tell the computer what you're carrying. After that, the same button lets you punch up Comfort, Normal or Sport mode on the fly. The system is as easy to use as it is effective. And it's quick.
| Cassette-type stacked six speed, Paralever rear & Duolever fork.

Very cool stuff!! | Yeah, and they're probably difficult if not impossible to work on, cost a bundle to repair, and the notion they're more reliable than the Japanese stuff is dubious. At best.
Gimme a big Asian open classer like the Hayabusa, the CBR11 replacement or an FJR and the money left over can sit in the bank. |

Seriously though... The new "K" bike is a bit too pricey for me and I have no plans to cut the 'bird free anytime soon. Just as an aside... I had been led to believe over the years that BMW's were the epitome of reliability. Maybe I've been led astray. |

| Re: BMW pushing the Bus? (don't look Chain) Another reason that BMW products are so costly is their employees are the highest paid in the world. In fact BMW are looking for ways to possibly dump some of the employees & might possibly have to drop a line or two.

| Re: BMW pushing the Bus? (don't look Chain) The thing that makes BMW owners go on and on about their bikes is that the weight, torque and wheelbase (and statbility) make a novice to intermediate rider feel like a hero on the street.
As far as reliability, a common problem is the rear seals on the shaft drive starts leaking around 50,000 miles. The bikes are extremely durable and will frequently see 200,000+ miles with nothing more than routine maintenance. However, routine maintenance is quite costly. They occur every 6k and alternate between $200 and $400. For long-range sport-touring, many people feel nothing else compares.
The bike in the pic is my 05 BMW R1100S BoxerCup Replika. (my 4th beemer) I've ridden to Spokane, Wa. and back from Indy including, an 810 mile day and could have gone further. The bike currently has over 10,000 miles on it after about 4 months of ownership. It does well on the track and will almost hang with the newer 600's. The 1000's blow it away on the straights but it will carry pretty good speed through the turns. It has about 92 hp at the wheel and about 75 lb.-ft. of torque. It weighs 525 lbs full of fluids and fuel. I'm planning on trading for an 05 CBR1000RR in the spring.
The new K will probably be a great street bike but too porky for the track. A lot of what you pay for is the technology, even if it doesn't help anything.

| Re: BMW pushing the Bus? (don't look Chain) I'm curious about this new K1200S. I could possibly get one in a few years if the money came together, depending on what the other manufacturers offer at the time.
When I bought my 929, I figured I was buying a "reliable as a rock" motorcycle. Well it did great right up to 41,000 miles when a spark plug went AWOL, taking the threads right out of the head. Oh, and the cam shafts were worn down. I'm not complaining about my 929, it was less than half the cost of this BMW, faster, lighter and better looking, and frankly, I like it better today than I did when it was new. However, I'm beginning to wonder if the cost difference up front starts to make up for itself after about 50,000 miles. |
