APE manual cam chain tensioner

Whats up guys...I bought a APE cam chain tensioner for my 01 929. I was looking through the manual and it looks like I will have to remove the valve cover to measure the slack. I'm think this is probably the best way and safest. I have heard some people adjust the new tensioner to the same length as the old, start the bike, then slowly turn until the chain is quiet, then go 1/4 turn more and lock it down(without removing the valve cover). I dont think thats very accurate. If anyone has any feedback I would appreciate it. Thanks
