520 sprocket effects on HP?

I recently rode a buddies 1000rr which had the 520 sprocket kit and i was impressed on the hole shot and just the feeling of no lag- so i decided to have it done on my 06. ive got a micron slip on, pcIII and now the sprocket and it was dyno'd today at 144 hp and 74ft lbs of torque- the HP seems low over stock, granted i will never know if the extra horsepower is there or not, because the odds of me riding this sucker to its full potential is rare-but just a math/physics thing...................HHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM??????

Sprockets don't effect horsepower. Sorry. You will feel a difference as opposed to stock but that is due to the change in the drive ratio

Re: 520 sprocket effects on HP?

You are using a dyno the wrong way. You cannot use it to compare your numbers to another unless they are run the same day by the same person. A dyno is used to see the impact on changes made to your bike.

Different dyno manufacturers report power differently as well.

Re: 520 sprocket effects on HP?

a 520 conversion is meant to lower the unsprung weight of the bike.. it will help acceleration but to reiterate .. hp is NOT affected by this..

Re: 520 sprocket effects on HP?

A 520 set not only reduces unsprung and overall weight, it reduces rotating mass. Say your bike has a 530 setup with 100 HP at the countershaft sprocket, then at the wheel this would be somewhere around a 4% less due to the motor having to use power to move the drivetrain. By going to a 520 setup, the loss would be 1% less, "giving" you back 1HP. These numbers are for example only, the actual numbers can vary. And this also assumes identical sprocket ratios.

The reason why you would not get this is because of the increased maintenance and reduced life of the 520 kit. It it a pretty big difference. Worth getting if you do your own maintenance. If you don't, then think hard.

Re: 520 sprocket effects on HP?

Reduced maintenance being a huge increase over the stock 530 set up. Same amount of power being put down through a smaller, less durable in the long run, chain. In my experience, there are alot of things you can do for the same amount of money (or less) that will make a bigger difference.
