Dual Stage Fuel Injection (DSFI) system features two injectors per cylinder.
Centrally located fuel tank increases mass centralization and allows more compact frame design.
Line-beam headlights feature two-piece reflector design.
Engine/Drivetrain
Liquid-cooled DOHC 16-valve 999cc four-stroke inline four-cylinder engine features bore and stroke dimensions of 76mm x 55.1mm.
Sixteen-valve cylinder head features 30.5mm intake and 24mm exhaust valves with a 12.3:1 compression ratio for efficient combustion and high horsepower.
Larger titanium intake valves create a lighter valve train for higher rpm.
Intake valves feature double-spring design for optimum performance at high rpm.
Intake ports use new shot-peening technology that improves power and torque characteristics.
Cam-pulser location between the middle cylinders allows a narrower cylinder head and frame.
Direct shim-under-bucket valve actuation system ensures high-rpm durability and allows 16,000-mile valve maintenance intervals.
Forged-aluminum pistons with molybdenum coating for reduced friction.
Lightweight nutless connecting rods.
Iridium-tip spark plugs improve fuel combustion and performance.
Dual Stage Fuel Injection (DSFI) (see Technology Section).
46mm throttle bodies feature Denso injectors with lightweight valving for faster reaction time and 12 holes per injector to optimize mixture atomization, combustion efficiency and power.
Auto-enriching system is integrated into programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI) module, eliminating the need for a manual choke.
New idle-air control valve (IACV) minimizes torque reaction and smoothes response to small throttle changes through gradual reductions of air and fuel intake when the throttle is opened and closed.
New Ignition Interrupt Control system works with IACV and FI mapping to enhance driveability.
Smaller and lighter ECU provides two 3-D fuel-injection maps for each cylinder and two 3-D ignition maps for cylinder pairs, creating ideal fuel-mixture and spark-advance settings for superb rideability.
MotoGP-derived twin ram-air system allows high volume of cooler air to the 9.7-liter airbox for linear power delivery and incredible engine performance.
Butterfly valves inside the ram-air ducts open and close depending on throttle opening and engine rpm for optimum performance.
High-capacity radiator incorporates twin cooling fans and allows a more compact cowl for reduced drag coefficient.
Maintenance-free automatic cam-chain tensioner.
Starter gears located on the right side to produce narrow engine and increased lean angle.
Unique slipper-clutch design uses a center-cam-assist mechanism for easier actuation. Unlike an ordinary slipper clutch where the pressure plate moves side to side, the Honda clutch moves both the center cam assist and the pressure plate to provide additional slipper effect.
Nine-plate clutch is compact and tough, featuring durable friction- plate material.
New extremely compact exhaust system incorporates a catalyzer and control valve in mid-muffler design that reduces rear bodywork size and significantly improves mass centralization, reducing roll and yaw inertia.
Durable #530 O-ring - sealed drive chain.
Chassis/Suspension
Lightweight Hollow Fine Die-Cast twin-spar aluminum frame utilizes MotoGP technology (see Technology Section).
New aluminum subframe is lightweight and easily removed for ease of maintenance.

My wife wants to trade her 954 for a 1000 but I need to see how much it weights. Honda needs to give that to their dealers.

On official Honda websites it says 199kg, i.e. 438 lb. with full fuel tank, oil and ready to race!

When standing alongside it, it's quite decent looking. The exhaust isn't as clunky as you'd expect it to when you see Honda's press photos. It's got a chrome finish but is not much bigger than the one from a GSX-R 750 or 600.

Take a look in my user gallery. I uploaded some rear angle pictures for you.

Your right, it looks smaller in those pics. We need a demo day in Denver.

Hi peeps.

Does anyone know if the new blade will have some sort of embedded traction control system, which will be dormant until Honda decide to allow its activation?

I doubt it. Why have it if it's not activated and how would they activate it? The ECU does not support software upgrades. It can, but Honda won't say how to do it and if they sold something that can write to the ECU then it is only a matter of time before it is figured out how to change the ECU programming.

To get traction control, they would need a sensor on the front wheel.

Acording to the latest issue of Cycle World (I think), the new feature called "Ignition Interrupt Control" is Traction Control.

Sounds really interesting. Do you have any details on this topic? Unfortunately I haven't got any access to this magazine here in Germany.

Re: 2008 Honda CBR1000RR Specifications & Features

Re Traction Control, I was talking to one of the Honda guys on the Honda stand at the UK Bike show yesterday (26th Nov). He said the 2008 Fireblade (at least the UK model) will have a form of traction control called "Anti Slip" fitted as standard.

It doesn't reply on front wheel speed for traction control (as the front wheel could be off the ground). It compares engine acceleration measured at the crank and the current throttle/engine torque. I guess it must calculate or know the gear ratio and therefore knows the wheel acceleration. For a given engine torque and gear ratio, there will be an expected bike acceleration - too much acceleration = wheel slip (or rider jumped off the back) and therefore engine torque will be reduced to control wheel spin. This is apparently they way it's done on the Honda superbikes.

My thoughts on this method are 1) what if the clutch is slipping 2) If accelerating down a steep gradient, the bike will accelerate more for a given torque.

I guess there will be a few that will claim they regularly spin the back wheel whilst leaving corners. Even if they do, it will still make them quicker. Not sure about rolling burn-outs etc! Hopefully this system will save a low side due to too many beans on corner exit. I didn't ask if it can be disabled

Does anybody else have any traction control information / confirm the above. If this is true, why have Honda been so quiet about it?

Since 1992 the name FireBlade has conjured visions of a hard-charging superbike with attitude. While this is true of the very first two models, since then the FireBlade became a model of respectability. The 2006-07 model was arguably the best road-going superbike by being fast and bland in the same wheelbase. The 2008 FireBlade comes with attitude from its rev-happy engine, race-like steering (quick, responsive), stability and supremely balance chassis. Forget its blunted looks, this Blade will cut it.

That is false. In fact in the article, the test editor crashed because he thought it was. It is "A system devised to minimize the effects of drivetrain lash when the throttle is first cracked open" "It reduces the initial power output for a blink of an eye, then it takes up the slack between the shift dogs" It only activates itself between 25xx rpms and 6xxx. its also unique for each gear. The reason it disapears at 6k is because the "lash is drasticlly reduced at increases revs so why interrupt the ignition?"

Thats pretty much straight out of the article. Looks cool though

Never heard shift dogs used... any difference between that and saying... shifting?

Re: 2008 Honda CBR1000RR Specifications & Features

Ive got a question: I have heard that a custom exhaust may be harmful on these bikes because of the valves in the stock pipe. does anyone know if this is true? i would imagine that a custom pipe with a custom tune would fix this problem but i would like more opinions. The reason why i ask is because i plan on buying one of these bikes in the next month or two. Im not really a fan of the stock pipes on them but i have seen a badass system from leo vince that would be a must. I am also wondering about the headlights. Are they both the same bulb; one high one low or are they totally different. Hid's would also be a must!! thanks!

Not true. The previous model had a similar valve. Yamaha also uses a valve like this.

not true, fitting an aftermarket slipon pipe will do no damage to the bike, just leave the servo for the exhaust valve connected (electrically) or it will throw a fault code. if it was harmfull to the bike the dealers wouldnt sell em fitted with aftermarket pipes......
