| Re: Vicroads is Pushing for Front Number Plates The below is taken from here Frontal Identification for Motorcycles
Vicroads reported that a feasibility study is under way to develop a fitting to suit a wide range of motorcycles. A flexible reflective decal has been developed as a front identifier, and will be used in conjunction with a fixture component that will be both safe and durable. The prototypes of the decal and fixture have been tested on 50 motorcycles, which were photographed to scale from side and front angles. This stage was completed in December 2003 and a draft report indicates that of the 50 motorcycles chosen, a majority could be fitted using one option from an available seven, although four could not be fitted with the prototype fixture design.
The current step is to review and develop modifications of the fixture to accommodate motorcycles similar to the four motorcycles that could not be could not be fitted with the prototype. A further 50 motorcycles will then be fitted with the modified fixture to determine adaptability of the new/modified components.
This will be followed by a program of environmental testing, which will commence in the 2nd quarter of 2004. It is expected that, subject to outcome of current work, approval will be sought between the 4th quarter 2004 and 1st quarter 2005 to continue the project to the implementation phase. This date may be influenced by results of the environmental testing of the decal and fixture
The FCAI encouraged the working group to continue to work closely with the FCAI as the representative of motorcycle distributors in Australia, and sought to clarify whether this initiative was restricted to new motorcycles, or whether it was intended to cover all motorcycles. The aim is to cover all motorcycles, to ensure that speed enforcement can be applied to all vehicles equally. |

| Re: Vicroads is Pushing for Front Number Plates I know it is easy to say but have a mass disobedience campaign. That is dont fit them and then when you get fined go to court.
Can you imagine what would happen to our court system if every multinova / camera ticket was taken to court. |

| Re: Vicroads is Pushing for Front Number Plates I honestly don't think that it will be feasable for the government to push this through on a state level or even a federal level. The revenue generated from the missed bikes surely won't exceed the millions that is expected to fund this kind of project. As long as the manufacturers do not support the idea, and I guess they never will, I just can't see a way how it will go ahead.
On a side note, I found this quite interesting, something we already knew but should be out in the public more: "Looking at motorcycle crashes in NSW, the most common crash type involves cars crashing into motorcycles, and this accounts for 45 per cent of motorcycle crashes." Furthermore; "third of single vehicle crashes involve road factors and a third involve fatigue and a number of other factors". For those that passed year 3 math, thats 2/3 of single motorcycle accidents do not involve speed, amazing, all the press would have us believe otherwise.
So why do they continue to persist with articles stating increases in motorcycle deaths with speed cameras, speeding and motorcycle stunting.
its all bullshit mate, like the chocco conspiricy just involving bikes. |

| Re: Vicroads is Pushing for Front Number Plates I just found this disturbing news. After the government wastes taxpayers money persuing dumb ideas such as front numberplates on bikes, they will probably turn around in implement this:
RFID-enabled license plates
Taken from here.
The UK-based vehicle licence plate manufacturer, Hills Numberplates Ltd, has chosen long-range RFID tags and readers from Identec Solutions to be embedded in licence plates that will automatically and reliably identify vehicles in the UK.
The plates are the same shape and size as conventional plates, and are permanently fitted to the vehicle in the same way. But each e-Plate contains an embedded tag with a unique, encrypted identification number that is transmitted by the tag for detection by RFID readers. Multiple tags can be read simultaneously by a single reader at speeds of up to 320km per hour (200mph), up to 100 metres (300 feet) away.
The reader network, which includes fixed location readers (for use on the roadside) and portable readers (for use in surveillance vehicles and handheld devices), sends the unique identifier in real time to a central system where it is matched with the corresponding vehicle data such as registration number, owner details, make, model, colour, and tax/insurance renewal dates.
Now there are more important issues with this then just the ability of the government to futher their abilities to revenue raise. Such as privacy, tracking etc.
Hopefully some techy can come up with a device to interfere with signel sent by the number plate. |

But it doesn't seem to have affected the FNP issue, damn it.
