It's a case of you just not experiencing what can be had for less than the price of a new steering damper. I paid $630 and it was the best performance bang for buck I could ask for. I don't make money of this reccomendation, I'm just trying to seriously sway your attitude so that you can have a much better ride.
By all means, buy a steering damper after you get some suspension mods, IF you feel you need it.
It's your choice. Would you like a pain killer (steering damper) or perhaps you could fix the root of the problem (suspension mods) once and for all, then never suffer a headache (headshake) again.
Ok. JUST ****EN DO IT!!

(Sorry just reminded me of starsky and hutch)
I get your drift mate and i appreciate your concern. However i dont feel that something like a new shock would prevent a full blown tank slapper. I've had the odd headshake now and then when powering out from a corner so i just back off, bein the careful minded person i am. With the damper id be more confident to just give it without the worry in the back of my mind that i could slap side to side, like if i hit a crack in the road or something.
I'm sure somewhere down the line new springs, valves and a rear shock would be in the picture. but im not gonna be takin it to the track anytime soon. I mainly ride it on the road and i like to be prepared for anything to may come about. Heard of too many stories from mates which makes me extra cautious when i think about gunning it hard.
I'm sure u may not see it from the same perspective as i, but hey.. ur probably right!

Backing off in a tank slap can be one of the worse things you can do. |

I've put on a Scotts which cost me $450 to my door via the FS forum and took 15 minutes to fit.
The improvement is much more than simply preventing head shake or tankslappers.
The feeling of stability through mid corner bumps is very like that on the CBR1000RR.
But I'd be the first to acknowledge that the suspension doesn't feel as good as the current model.
My mechanic set up the dampings front and rear and recommends playing with fork oil weight and oil level/air gap before fitting replacement valves and/or springs. His adjustments seem to have improved things a fair bit but I haven't been out for a serious fang since. Just commuting. |

The damping rates were also changed via the shim stacks etc. The stock valves were retained as they are up to standard.
In the rear, the spring was ok, so just changing the damping rates and a 4mm spacer was added. The stock shock just isn't up to scratch and needs some serious attention in general. I'd reccomend going Ohlins or the like for a "real" shock. |

| Re: Rear seat cowl Ok got the M3 damper from Sook today. Thanks for the hospitality Trev, ur a top bloke for fixing my other issue as well. I'll recommend ya to all my friends and i'll come back when i need anything else for sure!
Must say that my penis hasnt grown any larger from the damper, however i could swear my balls have grown at least 2mm's
Bike feels really smooth in the corner and after giving it a bit i couldnt feel any headshakes while riding on the highway to work. Have yet to test it on a maq pass run. |

| Re: Rear seat cowl My pleasure dude. Glad you like it. Futant, who did your suspension? While true that the suspension makes a big difference to the bikes handling, it will NOT stop you getting tank slappers. If it did, then race bikes wouldn't use them now would they? Haha.
Enjoy the Matris damper SoulJahz. Cheers. |

Enjoy the Matris damper SoulJahz. Cheers. | Frank Pons did my suspension. Yes, it's true, they don't stop you getting slappers completely, but I have never had a ball shattering moment since I had the work done. It's made the bike much more stable and confidence inspiring to ride. Putting a damper on now would make it even better, me knowing I would never get a slapper at all.
Basically it has stopped 95% of the tank slappers that I would get, and if I do get one, it's a small controlled wobble, not some out of control kick in the nuts that scares the **** out of you. |

Z... | Yup, what Z said. The reality is that suspension isn't a simple thing to do. It's not like a pipe and a map, where you make a good purchase, plug it in, it sounds good get it mapped and your sorted.
It has a lot to do with who does it for you, how they set it up etc. Also has alot to do with how bloody honest you are in what you ask for when you get there. "Yeah, I want it to handle awesome for the track, and I only weigh 60kg" ... then they actually weigh 85kg and do mainly sport riding with the occasional track day. Well .. then of course it's gonna be ****ed isn't it!
One big thing with all the suspension tuners is that they do quite plainly offer for you to come back if they didn't get it right. I knew it was pretty sweet when I first sat on it and the front and rear of the bike sank equally .. beautifull. By the first corner I was creamin my pants ... much much better.
It all depends on who you talk to really. Some people have bad experiences with them, but most come away happy. One thing that is for sure is that if you go to Terry Hay you have no option but to get Racetech gold valves front and rear, and I dare say he'd even push them on you if you went in with a full Ohlins SBK set up! |

| Re: Rear seat cowl Yeah, but one other thing you can count on with Terry is that when you go there wanting gold valves and springs, that's what you get. I've seen with my own eyes, an R6 fork set up that was done by Frank, and the guy wasn't happy with it. When Terry pulled them apart, Frank had put R1 valves in it, coz hey, they'd be better (NOT) and the shim stacks on each fork, while adding up to the ame heights etc, each corresponding shim was a different thickness. The guy that rode our SP1 last year (pictured in my avatar) used Frank until the Qld round. That is where we lost the title. Frank was there and after Roly told him the bike was all over the place, and was sideways going in and out of the corners, Frank said that he looked the cleanest out there, and that's the best it would be. Huh? I wouldn't take my wheel barrow to Frank Pons to get done. While he tells you that he was Mladins crew chief, I know for a fact that he did nothing but get coffee and assemble parts. Mladin even takes his motox bikes to Terry to get done out here. Why would he do that if Frank was his crew chief in g.p? Bahahahahaha. We used Rick Pobjoy for the last round, and he pulled the bike apart, fixed the crap that Frank had done to it, and when we got it back, we didn't have to adjust anything for set up etc. It was spot on from the go. |

| Re: Rear seat cowl Terry did a great job with my girl's 600F4i. It's way soft and low for me, but for her 47kg frame, it's perfect though it is way fun to ride for us bigger guys - suspension may be soft, but because it is so low, it just flicks like nothing else. Everyone that rides it smiles
