| Re: If I were an Aussie... h my... haha... I go away for a day and this thread takes off! You Aussies do know how to post.
Where do I start... so much good advice but I'm still lost as to where to go. Several things... the weather; I won't miss the snow. As for the hot Christmas' with beer in my hand, well, I spend every x-mas in Trinidad or Florida anyway so this will be 'normal' for me and MUCH appreciated. Did I mention I won't miss snow?
Sounds like Sydney keeps getting a bad rap for unfriendly people... In fact, almost everything you have said about it (other than the weather) reminds me of Toronto and I don't like the people here in general so maybe I'll avoid it.
Melbourne still sounds a little big for me but maybe that'll be a good place to start. Canberra sounds much better now too.... arg... I'm so stuck on the fence.
<time delay... Jordan goes to the pub...>
I had quite a bit more to say... however... I kinda hit a pub and probably shouldn't be typing... |

Head up north, say round plenty or up to whittlesea etc and its rural. 45 minutes later you can be in the CBD.
Canberra? you poor misguided man hehe.....
I dont think people volunteer to live in Canberra....usually they are sent there for work. In Canberra I think they have a curfew at about 8pm cause its about that time that the place becomes deserted. A big night out in Canberra sees you tucked all nice in bed by 8:45pm. |

| Re: If I were an Aussie... Go to Melbourne if you like having Summer, autumn, winter and spring EVERY fukin day. It may rain more here, but when it does, it stays that way, stops and is sunny. Melbourne, not a cloud in the sky, lovely day, hang on, wind..............wait, clouds, christ it's pissin' pick handles......................it's just hit -45deg.........................oh that's better. sunny again. Hahahaha
The people are nicer in Melbourne though, although I only REALLY noticed that the first time I went there. After that, you expect it all the time, and it's not always like that.
Brisbane would be too hot for you, unless you dislike snow that much,. hahaha My mate lived in Qld, but further north than Brizzy, and when he came back here, in summer, we went to see him in shorts and tshirts, he was in a wool jumper and jeans, shivering. hahahaha Fuk that.
Melbourne has beaches not too far away , but the water is like swimming in the fukin antarctic compared to Sydney. Sydney is congested etc, and the road in Sydney itself are fukt, but 45-1 hour away and you're in either suburbia, coast, or somwhere in between. But if you can get to Melbourne, you won't be unhappy. |

Actually Cowboy some of what you say is or at least was true. Once upon a time people were posted here with work and regarded it as a hardship posting but I don't think that is true so much now. As far as nightlife goes I will grant that it isn't as varied as the big cities but it is a lot better than it used to be. Spike Milligan once called Canberra a cemetery with street lights. I remember when I first arrived in 74 I drove through the city centre and out into the burbs again and didn't realise it. But Canberra has matured a lot since those days and the cafe and pub scene has picked up a lot in the last 10 years. I was co-founder of a brewpub in 94 and it is still thriving. And where else can you go out and hit the twisties during your lunch break? |

From the Canberra section: Quote: |
Canberra is rather odd, a strange combination of politics, art and porn.
| I'm surprised no-one else has mentioned that little stereotype of Canberra already. That the pollies made sure that while they we're away from home they had open access to as much porn as they could get their hands on.
Canberra's also the only place you can legally buy fireworks, isn't it. |

| Re: If I were an Aussie... haha... you guys are killing me.
Edit: I was just checking out that site listed above; holy crap! 10% GST?!? Is this on top of sales tax as well? Here, we have 8%pst and 7%gst for pretty much everything... What about your income tax?
And... electricity. Fook. All my electro-gadgets are 120v.
I wonder if they'll let me import the 'blade.

| Re: If I were an Aussie... Said it before - we are the highest taxed nation int he nelgish speaking world. Our income tax is freaking ridiculous, and they are REALLY good at getting oyu to pay GST on other taxes.
EG - when you fly out of Sydney airport, there is a "noise" duty, it is $30 (or something) that doesn't bug me, it's the $3 I have to pay on top of that as GST that really pisses me off. the fact that I am paying another tax because I am paying a tax.
