They use ours (or course), in Europe at least. I know commercial GPS works in the middle east, for anyone, too.

I was in a 5 series on the Autobahn a few years ago, and its navigation worked just like mobile GPS here.

I really struggle to understand the logic here. None of the above represent dangerous or life threatening behavior on the road.

Has Vic roads upgraded all there camera's to rear firing recently??

There must be a way to protect myself from these ridiculous fines. Do they know how difficult it is to keep a Fireblade spot on or just under the speed limit????

Thanks for listening.
You call that speeding?? I feel for you, I really do. You should save those high speeds for outside the city.

On another note. We also live in the only place in the world that is spending millions each year to come up with a way to mount number plates on the front of a motorcycle. At this moment they are gunning for a sticker on a soft rubber mount. Its all in order to reduce thd horrific road toll (one of the lowest in the world). Its got nothing to do with revenue.....no really....

+1 I still can't get over those ridiculous tickets! In my more squidly days I was let go for speeds more than 4 times the sum of what he was over in all 3 of his tickets! And I'm talkin how far I was over the limit....not the actual speed!

I have been let go for 107k in an 80, 128k in a 110 and 100k in a 70 but that was all by human cops, not speed cameras. Speed cameras have no discretion. But even the speed cameras in Canberra are not as unforgiving as the Victorian ones. I think our speed cams will ignore you if you are less than 10% +2k over the posted limits. In Victoria it is 2kph or more over and you're gone. As Zeeman said, if the system makes criminals of the majority then there is something wrong with it.

I say you Aussies get dressed up in Koala suits and sneak up on those cameras with a can of spraypaint. When finished stuff the koala suits in the trashcans of your favorite legislators and then call the media!

Wouldn't you just love to be the $1000/day consultant hired to go to liase with the various bodies planning and discussing front numberplate options? And the best thing is - it takes years of meetings, numerous glossy reports (with heaps of graphs, tables, piecharts, etc) - all at $1000/day! How can I get a cool job like that?! It's not like you'd have any sleepless nights worrying about the pros of one proposal over another, or stressfull late nights at work.

"107k in an 80, 128k in a 110 and 100k in a 70"

I hate to break this to you mate - but you ARE a criminal and you give motorcyclists a bad name. What if a mother pushing a pram or a small child stepped out on the road in front of you?

Haven't you heard that every 5kmh over the limit DOUBLES your chance of being killed OR killing someone else?! 30kmh over the limit?! - you do the sums...

I'm with Will on this one when he says:
"I've never had a ticket and I have no problem riding my bike under the posted limit.
Perhaps it's you the rider not the bike."

Will sounds like a safe and responsible rider.

OK - so I'm joking. (not the bit about Will - I'm sure he is a safe and responsible rider - and also a bit of a fuddy duddy )

But seriously, I've had to listen to similar crap to what I wrote above from policemen and also magistrates (when I opted to go to court to try to mitigate a fine).

Explanations that seem quite reasonable in the sympathetic company of other motorcyclists just don't stand up under the cold stare of the police or a court. All you can do is hang your head in shame, mumble an apology, say how foolish you were, and promise not to do it again.

Come on guys, this isn't the "World Series Baseball" where the USA is the "world". GPS - GLOBAL Positioning System - it's global - works everywhere - even Iraq!!! your tech people are bright sparks when it comes to this stuff, and they know that making such a system global can make for huge returns - we have to buy GPS stuff to use it too... *

On a more serious note, this is what happens when people who have no ideas make the laws. I'll use diving as an example - in the lovely aussie state of NSW, according the the Occupational Health and Safety guidelines, a dive store may only fill your tank to 220bar (ish) even ii all your equipment is rated to 300 bar or higher. another example of people who have no idea making the rules...

*Disclaimer - this post is light hearted, and is meant to be laughed at

Actually, I think one of the main reasons for the euro system is because the US armed services control the GPS system. so when they go to war, they will reduce the accuracy from say 3 feet to 100 feet or whatever - the Euros probably don't want there traffic direction accuracy dictated by what wars are being fought. I may be wrong, but I remember reading that this was one of the reasons for it.

That's a background reason....but since there are more civilian apps for GPS than military, commerce is the primary driver as it dovetails with the EU goal of economic supremacy by 2010....

Read the white paper on the Galileo project...it's interesting reading...

from what I understand, citylink is in the process of turning their cameras around (so its probably not going to be free more much longer), and the speed cameras have been recently turned back on after the calibration problems not to long ago but I'm not 100% on that.

You might want to check out the below URLs for info on where the buggers are.
http://www.roadwatch.com.au/

Or get hold of one of these two gadgets to point point them ahead of time (they won't get the mobile ones though)
http://www.uniden.com.au/v3/product_gps_GPS301.htm
http://www.roadangel.com.au/

There are a few things you can try to get out of them.

1. Go and check out the photo graphs to make sure it is actually you....there was a girl on her Ls who go booked for speeding in an area she was sure she wasn't in. When she checked the photos it was a fat guy on a harley with a very similar license plate.
more info here

2. Apparently there is an hush hush rule that if you haven't had any speeding fines for a few years (or at all) and you are only a few kays over the limit then you can write a letter and they are required to drop that first offence
more info here

3. Not sure if this would work for you, but when you get the photo and it is you, check see if there is another vehicle in the photo with you. If there is you can try the trick of "it was him speeding not me" and challenge it.
more info here

Vicroads and Co have actually perverted the study that made those findings....the report says that your chance of crashing is doubled when you are 5km/h over the AVERAGE speed of the vehicles around you. It has very little to do with posted speed limits, particularly when conditions are bad.

I can't find the link of the website that we refuting Vicroad's interpretation/perversion of the study.......I'll keep looking and post it if I find it though.

Thanks for listening.
you poor bastard
yeah Victoria has done crazy.. in the 6 years ive had my licence (car/bike) ive only got tickets the last two and ive had 4 and a loss of licence.... i just save my speeding for the hills now where you cant brake the 100kmh's much on 30kmh corners anyhow
