| matt232 goes rubber side up took advantage of the long weekend and took off to Mt Beauty.....3 fantastic days of riding, Blackspur, Falls Creek, Mt Buffalo etc etc
Coming home along the Witfield to Mansfield run....I was pushing hard and WAY over cooked a left-hander marked at 50km/h (should be a 30km/h marked corner or lower....Vicroads will be hearing from me). Saw I wasn't going to make it so grabbed a whole lot of front bake......rear leaves the ground.....front tyre skids for about 5 metres before I hit the gravel on the other side of the road....go down and slide on the left side with me under the bike for about 10 metres through some rough gravel and rocks and pull up about 3 metres short of the trees. Instantly came to my knees and gave the double peace sign to the guys following me to show I was ok.
Bruised left shin, sore left knee...slightly sore left shoulder....so I came off very cheaply...shows the value of wearing gear with decent armour in it.
Front fairing scratched and dinted.....upper left fairing completely shredded....lower left fairing scratched.....left indicator ripped out of the fairing....oggy knob (frame slider) bolt snapped and no cut bracket bent back...animal deterrent whistle ripped off the fairing...Ventura rack bent back (I think I slid the 10 metres on that and my bag because the back of the bike is untouched).....left bar end and clutch lever scratched.....I think my handlebars are out by a degree or two as well.
I rode the bike home the remaining 300 odd kilometres without a problem and just finished plastic welding my indicator back into what is left of the upper left fairing so I can ride it to work tomorrow.
Might pop into the guy that made the oggy knobs and let him get some more crash data. And see if he can offer any advice about getting the bike fixed.
Also going to contact Vicroads and see if something can't be done about the incorrectly sign posted corner....4 bikes ran wide while I was recuperating....a few cars as well.....I also slid past a woman who came off on an R6, she was waiting for a tow truck since her engine case was cracked open in the fall.....apparently that corner has got a number of victims as well, its well known by other riders and also the local ambos. Time something was done about it me thinks.
But having said that..... stupid!!! stupid!!! stupid!!! stupid!!!

| Re: matt232 goes rubber side up Sounds a lot like my crash. BIke went down on the left side and stayed down. What type of sliders do you have? I was using shoguns; the offset no-cut bracket bent and punctured an aluminum water joint. I'll need to drop the motor now to replace that joint. Shitbitch. |

I know it is counter to reflex but we had a saying in dirt tracking, "when in doubt gas it" Sometimes you pull it out, others you at least lowside vs high. Grabbing front brake in a turn would seem a Would the site experts please correct me if I am wrong.
And Matt none was aimed at you since it is always easier to plan AFTER something happens, rather I am just trying to learn and improve |

A quick check today shows a bit of scratching and shollow gouges in the surface of the frame....I go past the maker of the oggys tomorrow and drop in so they can check them out.....they'll have a closer look no doubt. |

I straightened the bike up and grabbed for the brakes when it was obvious I wasn't going to make it around the first part......what I didn't realise at that stage is the corner has a second apex which closes up REAL tight.....where I came off there was a short run-off/track that allowed me to wash off speed. By the looks if i had of lent into the corner I would have low sided into trees and down a gully.
Short of slowing down before the turn my way turned out the be the lesser of the evils. I'm definately not saying there was any weighing of options just the dice toss seemed to go in my favor more that it probably should have. |

| Re: matt232 goes rubber side up Are you sure it was the "road's" fault? You already admitted you were "pushing hard". Fix that poor rig up and leave the pushing to the track. Pains me to see fellow .org'ers going down while overcooking turns on the street. |

95% my fault.....but that corner is apparently pretty infamous....and as they say prevention is far better than cure so if i can get the signage changed then we can save a few other people some problems.
The main problem I guess was that there was a 50km/h marked corner just before that corner and you hardly noticed the curve so when you came up to the one I came off on I went in thinking they would be the same.....they weren't. |

Actually one of the funniest things that happened on the way home was riding through the city to get to our riding groups Monday night coffee spot. I was the rear rider of 4, took off from the lights in the right lane and a little Hyundai creep up beside me.....the lady driver glanced at the left side of my bike.....did a double take to get a proper look at the damage....and immediately moved to the far left of the lane to be as far away from me as possible. I guess its not just beaten up cages that road users give the leaper treatment to |
