| Troy for the masses... Hi All,
I took a photo of Troy Bayliss that I absolutely love. I'm trying to figure out how to crop him and want your suggestions (please see the attached pics)... So what do you Aussies think of the man?
1. As shot. This can be printed ~ 15"x10"
2. Close crop. This can be printed ~ 6"x4"
3. Crop out lower sand. This can be printed 13"x9"
4. Vertical crop. This can be printed 7.7"x8.2"
Which do you think? Any other ideas? |

Thanks for making me rethink that though. I typically prefer "pureist" shots and hadn't thought about that lately. |

| Re: Troy for the masses... Set your crop tool to whatever size you want ie: 8x10 11x14, 10x15, 13x19 and make sure to set the dpi box to 300 and THEN crop it.
I voted for #2 but a compromise between 2 and 3 would be nice. |

I voted for #2 but a compromise between 2 and 3 would be nice. | I've never used the ratio in the crop tool before. Cool. Although, the dpi box... How does that help? Won't that cause PhotoShop to generate pixels and decrease the quality of the pic? |

| Re: Troy for the masses... Thanks Zop.
And thanks the rest of you guys too. It looks like a closer crop is the clear winner. I think I'll create something between #2 and #3 and try to get it blown up.
The Sook; Yeah, Troy is having a tough go. I saw him in practice and thought he and Barros were doing well. He was really pushing. In the race, the other guys just made some really agressive passes on him so there wasn't much he could do. |

Nope. The only time you'll see a decrease in quality is if your focus is off or you're trying to make an enormous print (20"+) in one crop or without additional scaling software. Give it a shot.
300 dpi is a safe number for prints. |

| Re: Troy for the masses... Hmmm....
Lets use this image as an example. It is currently 3008x2000pixels @72dpi. I then crop it following the instructions above, a really tight crop around Bayliss @300dpi. The image now has 3000x2400pixels.
I know I've thrown away lots of pixels by the nature of a crop but even still, there are 400more vertical pixels that never existed before. Photoshop must have generated these following some algorithm which to me says loss of quality?
I admit that the photo looks great on the screen but I suspect it will be soft and less sharp when I print it. No?
Like I said, I'm learning here so don't take this as a challenge, just me trying to sort this out in my head. It seems counter-intuitive if this is the case.
As for dpi for images, I've read 100 at a minimum (I know this is ugly from experience) and 200-300 is generally accepted for prints. I've read claims that the human eye can't detect more than 300dpi. I usually go with the Adobe default of 240dpi. Any reason not to use that? |

I watched him toss it in Turn 5 (right in front of me) and run to the corner station and halfway around the outside of 4/5 before being picked up by a marshal and taken to the pits. Within 8 minutes he was back out on the "B" bike and he had set a new best time."
wish him all the luck in the world, he's as aggresive as they get! |

| Re: Troy for the masses... Hey! I was standing there too. My friends were asking for directions and by the time they got back, there was no sign of a crash and wouldn't believe me that Bayliss went down. HA! I couldn't find any reports of the incident either so they still think I'm on crack. |
