| blew up on dyno!!! hi guys,
had the 93 blade on the dyno this morning, and just got a call from the mech that the motor let go on the third run, it was giving 121 and then it let go!!
he says its only on 3 cylinders, and will need pulling apart to check it out, not sure if its worth the labour $ or better to get a new motor, crazy thing is im moving to perth in a week, so bike will be on the trailer to there, but should i try and find a motor here in vic, or will i be able to find one in perth??
could really use some good advice on this one, what would a motor cost?
thanks in advance. |

| Re: blew up on dyno!!! you and that bike are cursed, it would be cheaper to just get a new, or newish engine than probably repair. Then if you get it repaired you have the issue of reliabilty.
With the amount of K's your bike had I'd say shes had a full and hard previous life.
Just get the best engine you can regardless of location you can just get it shipped |

| Who is responsible in this situation...whos to say the mechanic wasnt running way past redline when it failed? Were you having any problems with it before it went to the dyno? |

The only way you can blow up a sportbike (with a solid engine) due to RPM is a downshift or 3 at too high a speed. |

| blew up!! thanks for the replies guys, dont really know who is responsible as i wasnt there when it blew, see i live 150k's away from the garage, and dropped the bike off there a week go for him to rejet and balance carbs, and as i have only had the bike a couple of weeks not ridden it more than 50k'sso dont really know the shape of the motor, now i am moving to perth in less than a week and so need it up and running when iget therem so leaving it as is is not really an option, so asked him to price replacement, came back with $1800au for a full motor swap, does this sound about right??
would have liked to keep the old motor and get it rebuilt at my leisure, just in case!
just hope he doesnt blow the new one he will be fitting, better tell him to take it easy on the dyno this time!!
but yeah im also interested in who's responsible for a motor blowing on the dyno, but as i wasnt there i cant say what happened, i know the mech has a very good reputation, thats why i drove 3 hours to get the bike to him.
any suggestions warmly welcomed. |

| Re: blew up on dyno!!! Does the $1800 include exchange for the old motor or would you get to keep it? If it's $1800 after the exchange I think that sounds like a good deal. |

| Re: blew up on dyno!!! He didn't blow it up. hahahahaahaha That's funny.........All he did was run the bike on the dyno, (a power run) presumably to get an air/fuel reading and an idea of the power curve. The engine blew itself, had nothing to do with the guy dynoing it, unless he did what was said above, and even then, the motor would have been on it's way out anyway. The thing is, it would have happened on the road in the not too distant future anwyay, and better it let go on the dyno than with you on it huh? Mapping a bike on the dyno does what he just did , only about 100 more times, and they end up just fine. The motor was Gooooooooooone. Nobody is responsable for that. |

pommie, unless you are REALLY in love with that '93, why not think about "upgrading" to something a little newer? I know, I don't know anything about your finances, but it seems to me money would be better spent on something newer/less miles/more reliable. If that cost of a replacement motor doesn't bother you, then go for it. Just curious what you paid for the blade in the first place? |

| blew up!! sook, it was purely a term of speech ie, it blew up while he was working on it, i know its far better that it let go on the dyno rather than the road, but not funny when your moving to perth in 5 days and need the bike for work
bacchus,
not really in love with the bike, just need to get it fixed asap with moving, only paid $3kau for it, so half expected something to let go on it anyway, thats half the reason i wanted a run on the dyno rather than balls out on the highway!! |

| Re: blew up on dyno!!! A good 93 is worth high $6000's AUD, so a replacement motor is FAR cheaper than going for something newer. 919's are about $8000....
Go to www.findapart.com.au and get some prices to compare. If he's got a good rep then the price would be about right. I'd forget the rebuild option... you could well spend a grand only to find out it's cheaper to replace. Only thing is the replacement may have issues too.
Good luck with it... I feel for you as I've got a '92 with 60'000kms on it! |

| blew up!! hi stealth,
thanks for the info, yeah i cant believe it, it only had 44k on it, mind you who knows what its prior life was like!
at least it got it way under market price
and the mech is going to check the replacement motor out before fitting, clearances, compression etc, what a bummer it happens a few days before moving!!
the replacement at 1800 sounds ok, just dont get to keep the old motor, would have liked to rebuild it for a spare
but such is life, hows your running with 60k?
do you get the dreadful rattle when first started, mind you that may have been a sign for me that the motor was on its way out
anyway all will be good in the end |

| Re: blew up on dyno!!! Apparently ALL blades rattle, but no mine doesn't at start. It does on accel.. and i figure it's the cam chain - which I am told they all do...So is the new motor a reco, or just another used one?
Think you self lucky. A buddy blew his busa motor and it's costing something like $5000k to replace! |
