Testing the Limits of Yourself & Your Bike Survey

Hi,

My name is Catherine and I'm currently looking for people to participate in my research project. This project is part of my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology degree at Deakin University.

The project follows up a study conducted in 2008, which found that people high in psychological need for control (people who like a lot of control over their lives - if you like, ‘control freaks’!) were generally safer riders. However, we unexpectedly also found that these riders reported more performance of stunts (wheelies and wheel spins).

This study therefore aims to further explore the relationship between safety and stunting. Are those high in need for control seeking to test the limits of themselves and their bikes? Can stunting help you become a safer rider?

We are therefore looking for licenced on-road motorcycle riders, who have ridden within the last 24 months, to complete the confidential questionnaire that makes up this project.

If you're interested in participating, or just want to find out more, then please follow the link below:

Question 14, 15, 16 & 17 Are we talking about 1kph over the limit or 100kph over?
Question 18 I launch hard from lights regardless of whether there are others around. I don't do it to beat anybody else. How do I respond to this?
Question 26 Does this include wet weather?
Question 31 I assume this question assumes you are wearing a helmet?
Question 33 Does this include brightly coloured racing leathers or only specific high-visibility clothing?
Question 34 Does this mean all the time during daylight or just in general?
Question 35 & 36 Does this mean specifically because you've made a mistake or because there is an obstacle on the road?
Question 37 Does this include steering wobbles or slides where you don't feel like you are losing control?
Question 39 Does this mean due to wet weather or something else?
Question 40 Is a statement that asks nothing.
Question 41 Should simply say "after drinking alcohol". Too many riders prefer to believe they aren't over the limit.
Question 42 I wear leather two-piece suits - how do I respond?
Question 44, 45, 46 & 47 Do you mean do I practise these maneuvers or do you mean in traffic?
Question 49 Do you mean an organised group of riders that you know?
Question 60 I've had 29 motorcycle crashes but none in the past three years. The last was 2004 on the race track.

Part 2 of the personality questions, Question 10. I don't gamble because I understand that for me to win somebody else must lose. It's a moral question, not a risk decision.

Not when they're aimed at statistical analysis :-)
By coincidence my girlfriend went to Deakin Uni herself.
I quite like the idea behind this survey since I believe laws need to address reality.
Training new riders to ride like children just to pass the test without providing any training at all on how to control their bikes in the situations that we all know they are going to ride on occasion is ridiculous. Riders rarely die due to poor training when riding "properly", they die when they do stupid things and that's when they need the skills to survive. Pretending we don't ride the way we do is not helping the riders, other road users or society in general.
