I get my bike next week and I want to remove the mud flap

Will the removal cause unwanted attention?
Do they look for the plate light? (thinking if I have the light and a braket that they will not bother)

First let me tell you I am not a squid, but I find in Toronto that you do get pulled over a bit to check licence, registration and Insurance. this does not bother me too much cause I have nothing to hide.

I just think the bike looks better with out the mud flap.

On the plus side it bolts off the GSXR so if it is a problem I can always put it back on.

I am talking about the licence plate light not head light

Does the taillight provide enough light to satisfy the police?

On the 929 - the taillight has a clear portion that was used
On the 954 - I made a bracket and used the light provided by Honda.

I am just wanted to know if it really needed. - I am not trying to circumvent the police so they cannot see my plates

As far as the front wheel being up – I have never been very good at that sort of stuff but I never really practiced it either.

I have a simple aluminum bracket holding my plate (which is bent out almost 180') and no plate lights to speak of. I've been pulled over for speeding a few times with this arrangement and the cop hasn't even mentioned it. I think you'd have to be really mouthy or arrogant to a cop for them to fine you for not having a plate light. Seeing as you've pulled over in the first place you're clearly not trying to evade them.

Seems to me there is a company that sells license plate bolts with lights (leds?) that would illuminate your plate at night.

In the USA, you need to have a lisence plate light. I don't know about Canada. I love the way you accept being pulled over simply to check your papers because you have nothing to hide. That was one of our basic freedoms before 9/11. I hope to some day regain that freedom. Unfortunately, it would take another revolution.

We are required to have plate lights here, but like I said, it would take a real CNUT of a cop to fine you for it, unless you were being a dick. But then again, you're in Ontario and in my experience the OPP have always done their best to be CNUTS.

When I was in Perth, Australia I got pulled over four time in one night. One was a Ride program the other three were police doing spot checks for the same thing. One of them actually had a flash light out checking my brake pads and the bike was only three weeks old. Oh well what can you do

I try to be nice as possible but also ask questions. Like why have you pulled be over officer. Using this approach I have not had any problems.

The last time a got check for Insurance in Toronto they explained that buy there calculations half the bikes on the road this year (2004) do not have valid insurance.

OK Back to topic and anyone from Ontario had problems not running the plate light?

I have been pulled a couple of times for it, nothing too major, I just lied....the bike was vandalized and I can't afford to repair it, I was told that it was ok for daylight riding...the list goes on and on...you can get the little light up nuts to hold your plates on? that may work, fender eliminators are pretty cheap too? I am not currently running a light and I don't get too much hassle either?

OK here is a thought. You will have your natural evil leak out once in a while and give the reason to pull you over. That said why give them another reason for something trivial to avoid. That is my thinking at least.

Hey...

Don't go nuts on brackets and lights.

Yes, you DO need a light and yes you can get pulled over and ticketed for it. However, you can do it with LEDs that are simply placed and effective.

If you want to do it yourself, I have some spare LEDs around; Maci4Life did his breaklights so he may have some (or know where to get them) too.

Weird, I just removed mine today. Just threw the temp plate in the trunk for now till I figure out how to mount the real plate. Here we don't get that much flack for it. Usually the brake light is enough. Think about it, usually the cop will be behind you with his headlight shining on your plate, should make it easy to read and hard to tell if it's got it's own little light. I'm mounting my plate closer to the shock as I really don't care. I'm nice to the police and they're nice to me in return, mutual respect. If you get a guy on a powertrip just plead the old: "I didn't know I couldn't do that!"

if you're going to take off the mudflap, may as well take off the whole hideous tailsection and ridiculous pipe... then the ugly front end and the goofy signal mirrors

should be good after that
