| Crash percentage Holy ****
If you consider all the people I know that ride sport bikes there is a 55% crash rate.[ 2006 ] If you take out the girls the rate goes up to 83%. What's up with that? What can be done to reduce this? Most of the guys I know are straight. Is it lack of experience.? Not paying attention? These are on mountain roads. We have really no traffic to contend with. What are your ideas on how to make the ride safer? |

Ride with gay people. They're much more careful. |

| Re: Crash percentage Only people that have crashed have been hit by some asshat running a red or turning left in front of them. i do hear about it all the time when i visit angeles crest and topanga, but it is about 50 50 between sport and other types of bikes. |

What about your damp roads? You know sportbikes and wet or gravel are a real bad mix. |

| Re: Crash percentage Dig deeper in the demographics to pull out your statistics. What were the weather conditions, road conditions, we "SPEED" a factor, road knowledge, how long have they been riding. Break it down to that. In most cases people get into a turn hot and panic, stand the bike up and head out of a turn. Or they feel they have been down this road hundreds of times. Things change, gravel, dirt, leaves, black ice. As is a car, you should never being going faster than road condition and your abilities allow.
I have learned two things the hard way on the street.
1. Always hold your line, ALWAYS. Others will go around. This works with your speeds and abilities as well. We have one dude in our group that loves to pass me two or three times. Whatever, we both get to the meet spot. THat is all that matters.
2. Never trust a car on the side of the road. Bang a U-turn/3 pointer on ya in a heart beat.
And one that I live by, especially out here in the canyons where rocks in the road are just a thing of life.
NEVER, EVER go faster than you can see around a corner and stop safely.
Willing to bet speed is a factor... slow it down. Save it for the track. |

| Re: Crash percentage Down here in south FLA theres at least one bike death a week in the paper. I would say 60% is from old people who cant drive cutting bikes off and running them off the road. The other 40% percent is people that go out and think there part of the Miami zoo crew. I had a buddy crash last week cause he decided to ski next to the bike and split cars hes was goin about 60 mph. hes ok but doesnt remember anything that happened. |

Glad he is okay but these are the people that I have absolutely no empathy for. Bring a bad image to us, cause we are all guilty by association and crap needs to be taken off the public streets. |

| Re: Crash percentage A lot of the crashes around Ft Campbell Ky (where i live) are due to guys making bad first first bike purchases. You see a lot of really young guys on 1k's/14/busas/zx12 . No safety course or prior riding experience at all. Immaturity and too much power! |

| Re: Crash percentage I believe most bike accidents are single vehicle where the rider fails to negotiate a turn in the roadway due to speed, road conditions, fear, etc. |

I mean when I bought my bike last Aug my mom flipped out and sent it to my dads (kawboy69) house. Not because she didnt think I could'nt ride. But because she sees all these stupid people on the roads and thinks Im going to follow them. It was soo bad that she would cut the clippings out of the newspaper and stack them on my bed. |

| Re: Crash percentage Thanks Mojave954, I really have not been paying enough attention to cars on the side of the road. I have learned not to trust animals along the roadside and kids on bicycles. Unfortunately the nearest track is 400 miles away. And as far as being able to stop within the distance I can see ahead on a corner I am guilty again All the guys I know have dumped it upon entering a corner. Too hot, not paying attention and inexperience. The next time I go out I will use your advice. |

Hwy 3 south out of Castlegar is one of my favourites... big, smooth fast sweepers. |

| Re: Crash percentage The majority of wrecks in this area this past summer involved young riders tooling along WAY to fast. Even if the speed is within their abilities there IS no place to ride fast in the urban tri-state area. We need to get rid of a damn mall and build a track. |
