You do know where their test flights took them way back when they "didn't exist", right?
But now we're really down to just a single bird problem. Until the first delivery of the 35 shows up (please don't keep the Lightning name). |

Eh, the troops will come up with something long before that. |

Fine for the Marines and maybe even Navy, but not Air Force. |

Not only that, but it sounds like the name of a bad movie sequel... Lightning II? Ugh.
I thought the birds of prey theme was really nice. Of course, we kind of ran out of those. We already have the Falcon, Eagle, Raptor, Harrier, and Hawk.
Northrop Grumman is one of the partners, they could have gone back to the Cat series... Hellcat, Wildcat, Tomcat, Tiger, etc.
Plus, if you are a fighter pilot, you could say "I fly a Tomcat" and get instant ass at any bar. Imagine if you say "I fly a Lightning II". It sounds like you are either on a gay pride parade float or in the movie Grease.
What's funny is that I deal with a lot of people in the program, and not a single one calls it the Lightning II. It's either the 35 or the JSF. |

If I remember right, there is a scene where a guy in "mission control" for lack of a better term, finds out they crashed, and tells some underling to call the pentagon and tell them "we've got ourselves a broken arrow". |
