| Re: Calling All Texans! BBQ house question When I lived in Tx, my favorite two places were Bodacious BBQ and Calvins BBQ in Longview Tx. The Bodacious is a chain and was extremely good. Calvins was a family owned BBQ house so only one but good God was it awesome eating. |

| Re: Calling All Texans! BBQ house question It all sounds GREAT!
Let me describe how this all started. Here is a copy of a thread I started on a GL1800 forum. People are taking a look. But so far, nobody has replied.
"I was surfing the TV tonight and came across a show on the secret life of the BBQ. Basically the history of American BBQ. The three basic styles were Southern, Memphis, and Texas style. Then I got to thinking what better way to sample all that this great Nation has to offer than taking a "BBQ Wing Journey" through the South!
But since I live I California, I figured I might start out a little more modestly. Maybe a South West BBQ Wing Journey. The one place that had me dripping saliva on the floor was a place near Austin called The Salt Lick.
Anyone from Texas familiar with this place? Are they as good as they claim?
Anyhow, I need names and places of BBQ joints from Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. So if you think you know where the, "Best tastin', lip smackinist, cheek puckerin', saliva generatin' BBQ that ever was" is, I'd appreciate you listing it here. Thanks!"
What do you guys think? Is it a Noble adventure?

So let me sum up:
1. You live in Cali.
2. You own a Goldwing
3. You are planning a BBQ Bike trip accros Cali, NM, AZ, and TX.
Net net: "I hate you."

| Re: Calling All Texans! BBQ house question All righty then! We have a destination. Now all we need are stops along the way that have BBQ to die for. After all, I can't be expected to make the 1700+ miles on an empty stomach.

| Re: Calling All Texans! BBQ house question Be sure to bring your preload adjusting tools so you can adjust for your new size on the return trip.
It may not be real Southern BBQ, but I really miss Armadillo Willy's since moving out of the Bay Area. |

| Re: Calling All Texans! BBQ house question Armadillo Willie's? Yummy. We have them here. Their pulled pork sandwich is Awesome. I get the Special; it's loaded with Jalapenos Cheddar cheeze and extra sauce.

| Re: Calling All Texans! BBQ house question Hey nedro, can't speak from experience, but the place in Tucson that seems to be quite popular is Jack's Original Barbecue, 5250 E. 22nd St. Let me know what you thought, should you give it a go. |

| Re: Calling All Texans! BBQ house question Dang, just saw this thread now. Salt Lick is good. I love the sauce.
Skully is right about Coopers too. It is very good.
Post up the date you are going to Salt Lick. I may try to make it out there if its not during the work week. |

| Re: Calling All Texans! BBQ house question This is a little out of the way, but it's my TOP PICK... When you are around Austin, detour over to Taylor, and stop at Louie Mueller's BBQ. The place has been in what used to be a warehouse years ago, but since the whole building has been smoked. There is an antique Wurlitzer jukebox in the corner that you can't see in the glass anymore. Pick up some sausage and head over to a table. They have a wall full of business cards, and you can tell where the new ones start because you can still read them. The old ones are smoked.
I went there many times as a kid, and my dad did the same. My family has known theirs for years, and everytime I am down there, I stop by.
Oh, and the Salt Lick is damn good as well.
Sometimes I really miss living out there.

That is the best Barbeque I've ever had.(and maybe best food period)
I'll be in Austin in June, I'll have to find the Salt Lick.
Getting hungry now...

| Re: Calling All Texans! BBQ house question I'm guessing I'm really late on this, but if you still have not come on over to TX here is my opinion:
Salt Lick- it is good, but not the best, is a very nice seenic drive out to Driftwood
Rudy's- is a chain, but I like it better than the Salt Lick, has a spicyer bite to it
South Austin/Manchaca- there is Railroad BBQ on FM1626, they have very good brisket and ribs
Lockhart, TX-has several very good BBQ places...it has been since my childhood since I have been out there though here is a link for Lockhart BBQ places
Like Skully said Coopers in Llano |
