| Re: Lane splitting legalized Similar to the lane splitting rules in Germany.
It doesn't address splitting lanes at a red light to get in front of slower starting traffic. Know if that's legal, too?
Europe is so much more fun to ride in. Motorcycles and motorcyclists are actually treated with respect. I miss it so much. |

When I was out in Cali, the motorcyclists were driving me nuts lane splitting. They would pass me on the left and right of a two lane road (a lane going in each direction)!
I'd rather sit in traffic than lose my life or a limb to save a few minutes. But hey, that's just me and my narrow minded opinion. |

| Re: Lane splitting legalized I did it for many years in California. Yes, people resent it because they can't fit their cars into the same opening. But so what? It reduces the amount of time they have to wait, because it allows greater use of the road capacity.
The five mile per hour speed differential thing is pretty lame, as is the 20 mph max traffic speed. It puts you in such a narrow speed envelope that you can't ride naturally with the flow of traffic. The five mile per hour rule insures that you will spend the maximum possible amount of time in between cars. To me, the zone inbetween cars is a place to move into and back out of as quickly as possible.
The actually letter of the law may not matter much, because that will be extremely difficult to enforce, just as it is in California. If the traffic is dense enough to make sense for lanesplitting, it generally precludes the level of access that the police need to catch up to you to pull you over. The speed laws portion of the lane splitting rule will largely be ignored in practice, as it is in California, because common sense will put speeds where they need to be for safety. They are enforced only in the most extreme cases, mostly to make a point.
The biggest problem for the short term will probably drivers that are ignorant of the new law.
I'm glad I'm not doing it anymore. Now, with all the view blocking SUVs, you don't get the visibility advantage that you used to on a motorcycle. Add the cell phones and it almost pushes the danger beyond the point where you can be safe. It already required at least as much concentration and focus as riding on the track at racing speeds. |

Z... | Its not illegal in Vic, just not explicitly legal, and there are a few other infringments you need to watch out for. But ultimately it depends on the cop you get on the day. Most are cool if you are being sensible, but recently had a motorbike cop telling me off saying whichever way you look at it its not legal. http://www.mraa.org.au/index.php?opt...age&Sub Menu= |

On 4 lane highways (and more if you're in larger cities) the traffic that you'd be splitting is usually in crawl mode. The time savings is usually a lot more than a few minutes and in places like Germany where gas prices are 4 times that of anywhere in the states, it's fuel savings too. |

| Re: Lane splitting legalized OMG! Lane splitting in Texas?! Good luck with all of those red neck
ranchers - they're probably just salivating at the thought of throwing a pick'm-up-truck door open in your path. At least that is my take on "West Texans"... Maybe they're a bit more civil in big cities. But still, those red necks gotta go into the city now and then, right? Anyway, good luck with it! I think if lane splitting were an option for me,,,, I'd pass, er, forego the option. |

I generally split along any straightaway and very rarely travel between turning vehicles. Splitting/sharing in carpool lanes is nice when someone is enjoying a casual drive while I'm trying to get home. |

| Re: Lane splitting legalized It is actually legal in certain states here in OZ, provided you do it right.
Pass the car on it's RHS, within the same lane, and there is no law broken. Provided it is done sensibly, and with a minimum speed differential it is also very safe. I will have to learn to do it that way some time soon |
