However as far as being mistreated because you are not LDS I HIGHLY doubt it as all members I have met I would describe as wonderful people. Oh and having met you Speed I doubt they would try to convert you.... might even recognize yuor horns and run YOU off....

| Re: Tell me about Utah My sister went to Salt Lake to visit 25 years ago and never left. I've been to visit her many times and would move there in a heartbeat. The city is clean, relatively safe, and the people are generally nice (compared to Detroit!). Not sure about the cost of living but it has to be less than Kalifornica...

Found this little tid bit on the net: Quote: |
Stereotypes always linger behind the curve of change. Visitors to the state that is known for polygamy and tough liquor laws may be surprised to find that it produces a beer called Polygamy Porter (advertising slogan: "Why just have one!").

| Re: Tell me about Utah Actually, SPEED, all that stuff you've heard about Utah being repressive is true.
In fact, that waiter you were so chatty with was a staunch Republican LDS disguised as a flaming homo. |

| Re: Tell me about Utah The truth of course is somewhere between Deez and BDA.
I'd put Tooele low on the list though. My uncle, who migrated to, and will probably die in UT, does construction and his crews, along with him, hate it out there. A ways from everything, and the weather is more severe there than in say Provo. Apparently the winds are worse (though you're used to that out in Riverside!) and the storms get funnelled into that valley by all those pretty mountains. Also, as a WAG, I'm guessing out there in BFE the schools will be subpar compared to here in Cali. In the towns like Provo, Orem, SLC and such, the schools might beat what you get in Riverside.
You will deal with snow out there. It won't be terrible, but it will be there. And it does get cold as a MOFO too.
Utah in general is very cowboy. Abtech mentioned the Mormons and the Cowboys...often they're found in the same people IME! Though as he says, plenty of rowdy cowboy bars too.
UT definitely lacks for diversity. It will be incredibly obvious to you as a Californian.
It has much fewer people, therefore a much smaller tax base, and the infrastructure as soon as you get off the beaten path quickly gets down to very poor levels. Probably not a big deal either, but it's another thing I always notice out there.
Culturally, and food-wise it's also very lacking compared to CA, if that matters to you. My relatives tend to want to do two things when they come to CA, eat food, and goto the beach!
On the upside, it's a much more healthy culture. If you get up at 5AM, even when it's freakin' cold, you'll see lots of people out running before work. You'll notice people are VERY serious about their "hunt'n and fish'n" there, I think they boarder on religion along with the LDS church!
Crime is low (and real low outside SLC) the air is clean, and the mountains are beautiful
The laws are much less restrictive, and I think you'll find much more logic in them then out here in Cali.
I wouldn't put it at the very top of places I'd leave Cali for, but it'd be on the short list I considered.

| Re: Tell me about Utah Again,
Speed, you saw for yourself what it was like out there. You also saw about the worst of the roads on your trip.
I could write lots on my perception of kalifornistan and claim to be an expert because I lived there for a few years and have family there and from there.
What it comes down to is what you experienced and can find from unbiased sources.
Oh, and at certain times during the winter the air will be worse than anything you've seen before. Temperature inversions in mountain valleys aren't good.
Don't forget about the transvestite pizza delivery person as well. It was a staunch right winger undercover LDS Opressor, too.
The Salt Lake valley and Utah valley (where Provo, Orem, SF, etc. are) are more expensive then Tooele as they are the population centers, but you can still find mid to upper 100s housing all over. |

We have a huge wooden playset for the kids & the wind picked it up & moved it about 5 feet a few years ago.
So, how cold "IS" cold in Tooele anyway? It was 85 both days when I was there | |

| Re: Tell me about Utah Unbiased sources? Who, you BDA?
Whatever man.
Speed, just go check average weather on weather.com. I went out there for a trackday and was snowed out in spring. It was in the 20's during the day. The next day it was 80's I guess. I'm sure in winter many days it's in the teens.

| Re: Tell me about Utah BDA...are you a member of LDS?
Personally, I wasn't too impressed with SLC itself from the driving around we did there on Sunday, but then not too many bigger cities impress me much. I admit, that I'd have to look around more than one day to get a better feel, but it wasn't an area that struck me as one that I'd put on the top of my list (though it would definitely be higher than midpack).
The area is kind of like here but with a "few" more trees and a bit more brown grass to replace the sand and tumbleweeds. You can be in the mountains just the same as here, but there's no beach 2.5 hrs away.
Personally, if I was to move out there (having grown up in very rural Northern MN) it would have to be outside the city etc. That would give the opportunity to have a decent piece of land etc etc. I love the small town living I'm in now (30k).
If BDA's any indication of the people out there, everyone should stay far, far away.. (though a lot of my views follow the same train of thinking.. ) |
