| Maybe Drag racing this weekend I am hoping to be making a couple of passes this weekend on the 1000RR at one of he near local strips(2 hours away)
I have never been to the strip before and am wondering what I should expect? I have heard that the pavement is MUCH different than regular roads, is it pretty slick or is that a misconception?
I should be running a new 180 pilot power(Hopefully)
any ideas or tips to a first timer? oh yeah the temp should be peaking around 12...so I am not expecting it to be a real scorcer |

| Re: Maybe Drag racing this weekend be real careful with cold pavement even with the sticky track compound.
while I've never done it myself, ride the clutch out and keep on the throttle.
have fun and keep us posted on your times.

| Re: Maybe Drag racing this weekend I figure that my times should vary from slow to very close to embarassing...
If I had of know that I was going to be doing this I likely would not have put the CRG stubbie's on quite yet
I am thinking that the first run or two will be to try establish what traction is like and then have a good go and hope to break in to the low 11's (trying to be realistic here) |

| Re: Maybe Drag racing this weekend Screw the adjuster at the bottom of your rear shock to full hard, lower the pressure in you're rear tire to about 20psi. I'd say a comfortable launch for you would be about 4k rpms. Let the clutch out smoothly while laying on the throttle. Keep the front wheel on the ground, or close to it, shift that sumbitch as fast as you can and most importantly, have a blast! |

| Re: Maybe Drag racing this weekend On that type of tire, drop your tire pressure to around 15psi for starters. I run between 16-22 on a drag tire (Shinko). Ride the clutch as stated; try leaving the line around 4K rpms for starters and see how it feels to you. Go FULL throttle when you get into 2nd gear and have your foot under the shifter and blip the throttle about 500rpms before red line. Take it easy like you said and just have fun with it!!!! |

| Re: Maybe Drag racing this weekend Not sure about adjusting the shock to full hard...I have both of mine on the shock 1/2 turn from full Soft. I am lowered and extended, so maybe thats why it works for me, but by turning it to soft, it lets the back end squat leaving the line and puts the weight on the back tire to help keep it from spinning. |

| Re: Maybe Drag racing this weekend if my friend can get mid-low 11s on his frist run on gsxr600 and get kicked off for going 120.28mph than I bet you can do low 11s even in the cold.
I also say soften the suspension not harden it. Hardening it all the way will make it want to shoot right up into the sky assuming it doesn't spin like hell.

| Re: Maybe Drag racing this weekend I thought adjusting it to full hard would hurt as well. I did it since it was a suggestion from a friend, (who runs a high 7-second big bore busa). Don't know why but it actually helped.....but then again, my bike has nothing but a strap on it as far as suspension goes. If I were you Northern, I'd try both. |

I can't tell you anything that hasn't already been told here. Have funa dn be careful those first few launches till you get a feel for how things go when accelerating like that. Mind your front wheel. Have seen many a first timer loop it at the starting line coming off the clutch too hard at too high a rpm.(even saw a hardley dude do this last year. used to be a nice bike he had just finished building..)
Actully one thing does come to mind.. I don't know if you have any experience shifting without the clutch but once you get things going smooth you can experiment with that and make yourself a little bit faster.

| Re: Maybe Drag racing this weekend Thanks for the great info guys... I am really excited about this, I grew up watching cars at the strip, but I have a feeling this will be a "bit" different.
I am a little paranoid about the whole traction thing, I have heard stories of no traction at all and stories of being able to hook like you were glued. I just don't want to do anything stupid like loop it off the line or do a 200 foot 2nd gear rolling burn out into a high side by mistake
I will have my full leathers on so hopefully they won't say anything at that temp I almost always do unless I am just riding to work (which is 4.5 kms away)
Thanks again for the help and I will let you guys know how I manage
I hope that this does not become addicting, I was hoping to get hooked on road courses instead |
