2nd time slower??

hey guys i went to the drags with my 954 last year and ran a 10.69 with the full system pc3r but with a non custom map and stock gearing...

well my mates organised a meet up and i was keen to try again now i have a dynojet custom map...i also dropped a tooth on the front sprocket to try and help get a better time... well i did 8 runs and my best was 2 tenths slower than last year

i know i was doing really bad starts but i was trying.. some of them felt pretty good...last year im pretty sure my 60's were 1.7

but yeah this time around with the bike running a load nicer i couldnt go anywhere near my old time

best time this time around
60' - 1.9
660' 7.150
mph 105.50
ET 10.890
MPH 130.20

with the custom map that i got 2hp outta and the gear change i was thinking 10.4-10.5

gearing really help at all???

Re: 2nd time slower??

There are SOOOO many variables involved here it's impossible to start.

One thing though, -1 in front will probably make the bike want to wheelie more so you may have backed off the throttle a bit.

You did state that your starts weren't as good as they were last year. Maybe you need to try and launch a little more aggressively. Drag Racing takes time. The toughest part is the start. In reality thats where many races are won or lost.
Practice, Practice, Practice. You want to be on the edge of a wheelie when you go through the 60ft.

You could have had traction problems as well due to track prep.

Stock wheelbase.....you need to shoot for 1.64 or better. Any extension at all and you need to be atleast 1.56 or quicker for your 60ft. It does take alot of practice. I've got some bolt on extensions I can sell you if you want them. Powder coated black. $150 shipped.

Re: 2nd time slower??

cheers guys

yeah bob the new gearing was freaking me out a bit in 1st....
so i just burnt the clutch til high revs and banged it into 2nd then went WOT... my mate on an R1 killed me on the start but we both ran 10.890. me with 130MPH and him 128MPH this mean the 954 has a few more horsies?? or is the new gearing helping in 2nd and 3rd??
we had a bit of a head wind and it was really hot. +34.c
still it was loads of fun and it was only $55-AUD for 8+ runs

i also changed the gearing to help with my first trackday that was at a really small tight track last week and im back there in a fortnight..its a crap track for a 900 but ive got 20 mates going and its only $105AUD for the whole day

traction was no worries mate..i had new pilot powers and i dropped them to 30psi and did a brun out and there was that wet sticky stuff on the track so it was just bang right into it..only one run the back stepped out on me....it was just the front coming up and me backing off that i think stuffed me up....maybe ill keep to the tracks with corners

Re: 2nd time slower??

Don't give up the straights bro. You'll get it, it just takes time. You've got some decent numbers there for a bike thats mostly stock. Not only that, it sounds like you've got a bit of power too.

If the front is your problem I would definitely look into some swingarm extensions. I believe someone made a pretty good offer in this thread concerning a set of black ones. The good thing about extensions is the ease of removal and install. All you need is an extra chain for the drag strip and you will be ready to go.

Oh yea, you can also strap the front down and that will help a great deal with the launch. If you don't want to go the strap route you can always just raise the forks in the trees and lower it that way. It isn't as effective because it still allows the front to recoil, bounce, and move allowing enough upward motion to still perform a small wheelie.

Re: 2nd time slower??

Ok, always thought of drag racing as something hooligans do. Even on a track. I was thinkin about going down to a strip, and I was wondering how hard drag launches are on a clutch. I don't want to be slapping new clutches in all the time for a mainly street bike. My boss has a 95 mustang GT with a 347 stroker and nitrous that runs 11s that he was threatening me with... Think I'll get fired?

Re: 2nd time slower??

You will walk all over the Stang.
Then again, most tracks will never let bikes run with cars. Too much risk in the car killing the biker. Not only that, most bikes launch a lot quicker therefore they reach the line faster.

Launches can be hard on the clutch, but it's nothing that doesn't happen during most riding. The hard launch only lasts a second.

I ran an EC Kevlar Clutch all last year with no prob. In fact, It's still in the bike.
