Hey guys I am having a bear of a time getting this thing out of the hole. The clutch wants to lock up and not slip. Is there something that can be done?

Re: 06 cbr1000rr launch

I feel your pain! My normally great starts have completely turned to crap since upgrading to the 1000RR.

Now before anyone tells you its because its hydraulic thats not the case!

It has more to do with the plates running dry and the large diameter of the clutch. It is in a sense designed too well and just wants to bite.

Im trying to figure out a solution at the moment...

Temporarily Im going to pull the plates out and soak them before my next race, but this is a bit impractical could get tedious after a while, I considering blending ~5% friction modified oil (containing moly) with my normal oil, just hope it wont slip under normal conditions...

Im also going to chamfer the oil holes on the inside of the inner basket to help get some more oil through to the plates, failing that I will even consider an auxillary oil pump if I can figure out away to route it to the inside of the clutch as its no use just directing onto the clutch from the outside as centrifugal forces will just throw the oil strait off...

Ill be sure to update this thread if I come up with anything

Well, disregard my pm then....didn't realize it was grabbing too much for you. I'm sure you've tried leaving at a little higher rpm....I tried that and had to back off as the bike went side ways towards the tree...rutt row...luckily it was a bye run in the semi-finals...but I did have a .502 light!

Re: 06 cbr1000rr launch

You can also add a couple pounds of air in the tire so maybe it will give just a quick slip then grab.

Re: 06 cbr1000rr launch

well its an 06 1000rr, the clutch does not want to let your slip it, at all, as soon as it feels itself starting to slip WHAM it engages. We are going to rip it apart tonight to see if we can make some adjustments to how it engages. On thing I noticed is that the hole basket sits up pretty high and doesn't get a whole lot of oil to it.

Yeah I was just thinking of trying that as a bandaid fix just because Im so frustrated as it grabs every time off the line and thhe front wheel just snaps up and I have to grab the clutch to stop it looping out

Ideally I would like to leave the line at about 5500-6000 RPM but you just can not slip it and feed it in progressively as its just like a light switch...

Ive spoken to the engine builders from HRC Australia and they havent found a real solution The riders basically leave the line at lower rpm but I want to be able to start like I did on my 954

The only time it has worked ok was just after I had the clutch apart and had the plates soaking in oil, So i think if we can get more oil to the plates some how we can solve the problem....

Re: 06 cbr1000rr launch

Lou i just called we have it tore apart and something does not seem right. Riveted to the back of the basket is a primary gear with springs to help shock load. Well that plate will not move at all and the springs appear to be loose so it should move. It looks like there is some gauling on the basket where the two surfaces meet. It is setup somewhat like a care. I have never seen this setup on a bike. Have any of you taken these things apart this far and what are you experiences?

Re: 06 cbr1000rr launch

Problem solved. You have to reduce the friction surface area by 25% because the clutch is simply to big for the amount of torque the cbr is producing, its overpowering the motor. How to reduce the surface area ? there are 8 pairs of plates (16 altogether) what you need is 6 pairs but also maintain the stack height so you have to double up some of the plates. Start by removing all the plates and restacking them in a slightly different order. Well refer to the plates as outers (with castleations on the outer circumference) and inners (with castleations on the inside. Restack the plates in this order: outer, outer inner, inner, outer, inner, outer, inner, outer, inner,ou ter, inner, outer, outer, inner, inner then the pressure plate. Now you have 6 pairs of plates. I have just tested this setup in the street after first trying 4 pairs but got too much slip at high rpm. 6 pairs seem to be a happy medium and operates just like a clutch is supposed to. One thing for race bikes to watch out for is slip. By reducing the friction area your also reducing the grip area so after juggling the plates around you will need to test for slip and increase preload on the springs. If youre still running the narrow outer at the back of the stack you will have to double up a different pair of plates
Cheers and many happy holeshots RIPPERTON SYDNEY AUSTRALIA
PS would like some feedback on this.

Re: 06 cbr1000rr launch

Did anyone ever try the restack or any luck with anything else on the '06 1000 clutch? One of my friends traded in his 954 for a new 1000 last year and cannot get the thing to launch. He was the defending track champ on his 954, now he is lost somewhere in the back of the field on the new bike for the last year and a half. I rode his bike after the drags were done on Saturday and it starts to drag a little then just locks up! Rolling start, 5 to 10 mph you can slide the hell out of it (or just do a big nasty burnout!) and it feels fine. From a dead stop.....watch out! All the guys with the last model GSXR's had to add the wave washer/cushion into the clutch pack because theirs were doing the same thing and the newer GSXR's had that already in stock to fix same problem. But the '06 CBR already has the wave washer in it.

Tried converting it to cable, no help but I didn't think it would.
Tried different oil, ho help.
Soaked a new set of plates, no help.

I'm having the same problem on my 06, wish someone would come up with a mod to help this, I might try changing the plate order, but i dont want to sacrifice street riding and going through clutches faster. good thing there is next to none aftermarket support for us honda draggers

Re: 06 cbr1000rr launch

I dont know if it will help, but R1's had the same problem. I know a couple guys that have drilled a hole in the top of the clutch cover and ran an oil line to keep the clutches oiled. Seem to help R1's from burning clutches up.

Re: 06 cbr1000rr launch

I don't know if this would help or hurt but Cycle Logic has a lockup clutch kit available for the 1000RR. I guess you could add in slip then let the lockup do it's job when the revs come up.

I thought this was just my particular bike being so grabby- I was going to get a braided clutch line to see if this would help with slipping the clutch. I love my 954's clutch and my cousin's '07 ZX-10 has a pretty sweet cable clutch as well.

Take care,
Franc

Re: 06 cbr1000rr launch

OK, my buddy tried the restack. Worked great for 2 launches.......then started grabbing again! Took the bike home and tore the clutch out. Steels are blues and clutch is cooked!!!!! Threw in the spare sitting on the bench with the stock config and he has a Hinson hub/clutch assembly on order. The say it will absolutely fix the problem plus he'll then have a slipper.
