| Need advice on moving to Tennessee My wife and I are very seriously looking at moving to Jonesborough Tennessee. We currently live in Roseville California and own a home here. The reasons for the move are 1) We liked how the area looked the few times we drove through it. 2) Some of my family just moved there. 3) House prices are literally half the price they are here in CA. That being said I have a VERY nice job here in CA and I’ve tried with no luck to put my resume out in the East Tennessee area. We originally planned to move out there once I found a job. But now my wife has fallen in love with the “perfect” house. She is very scared it will sell soon and wants to get it. So that being said I’ve never just up and moved and rolled the dice like this. Can any one in the East TN area comment on jobs (computer related preferred). We have enough money to float us for a while but I’m also worried about medical insurance. We have a 5 and 6 year old to provide for. Anybody have any suggestions or issues I should be aware of? This is just such a risk for me, and I’m not a big risk taker. But sometimes you need to take risks to get ahead. Opinions? |

| Re: Need advice on moving to Tennessee Sounds like you are in the same boat I was in when I moved here. I live in Kingsport, not too far form Jonesborough... We fell in love with the area after coming to visit friends while I was in the military and decided then that we would move here whenever I decided to end my military career. Next thing you know my wife had me talked into not reenlisting again and we were up here finding a house to rent until we could buy one.
Moved up here with a couple good prospects on jobs(I'm in electrical/ mechanical maintenance). And luckily things worked out perfectly and I was working exactly two weeks after we moved in.
Computer related isn't too specific of an area to comment much on jobs but I think you shouldn't have much of a problem finding something pretty quick...
Since Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol are the three "bigger" cities in the area and all resonably close to where you are looking then one of those will more than likely be where you'd find a job around here.
you can look at www.gotricities.com and get all kinds of information about the area including usually a decent amount of job openings in the area.
If you end up here let me know..... Good luck with everything..... |

| Re: Need advice on moving to Tennessee I too was in the military (USMC). I was stationed in North Carolina for four years so I'm some kinda familiar with the area. As far as not moving until I have a job lined up. I've been thinking about it and I agree but on the other hand my wife has a few good points. 1) We would have no house payment because we would be paying off the house. 2) If I can't land a good job with medical right away we can buy insurance for the kids until I get a job with benefits. Not that I want to but I could work at McDonalds to pay the bills for a while (ya gotta do what ya gotta do).
Can someone tell me what the property tax is like for a homeowner out there? |

Now, to return to regular programming:
ibAdam, if there is any way you can manage it, I say go for it. I think that part of the country is the most the most beautiful (& I admit I haven't been west of Chi-Town). |

Can someone tell me what the property tax is like for a homeowner out there? | If you're moving out there and you're eliminating a house payment and have cash on reserve then go for it. You'll find something sooner or later... |

It will be easier to find work in a new place if you live there already.
The coolest boss I ever had once told me "you can live to work, or work to live".
The move sounds to me like an improvement in quality of life. |

One thing I'm worried about with this house is the days on market (275). The realtor told me it was due to the higher price of the house. That can't be true because it's not that high (240,000) for the sq footage the house comes with. I just got a different realtor today and I'm going to have her look it over real good and see whats up.
Anybody know how I can find out what TN charges in property tax? |

That comment was so Californian...in most places, a quarter of a million dollars is a LOT of money for a house! |

My boss just moved to some nice area just outside Boston. (I can't remember the name) He got a HUGE house for same money.
For $240k, you could not buy a house here period. My place is less than 1000 square feet, and you could not buy it for less than half a mil. And, there would be a line at that price. |

Here in CA my house no basement just 1300 sq ft and market price is $405. |
