| Re: Another hurricane. Houston is going nuts - I had to buy bottled water 150 miles outside of town on my way back from Dallas today because all of the local stores have already cleared the shelves.
Evacuations starting tomorrow in Galveston and moving progressively inland. We are about 80 miles inland on the north side of town and are sitting on the fence right now. If she goes Cat 5, we're Dallas-bound, I believe. |

| Re: Another hurricane. Thanks sheep - we've got plenty of H20 for the two of us (the hound can drink rainwater if we get desperate!). We planned on filling at least one of the tubs in case we lose running water so we can at least flush toilets when required.
The big one has missed Houston / Galveston for a while and we are overdue. |

As it stands now, it looks like it will make landfall around Corpus Christi. We are staying put and are planning for the worst while hoping for the best. I feel for all of those people that came here to get away from Katrina... they must be feeling like these storms are following them. |

My parents (who live in Houston) just rented a house to a family that left LA and will never go back. Now this. They tell me there are lots of refugees there. |

| Re: Another hurricane. I'd really like to see Rita make a hard right and go square into N.O.
Not saying that to be mean (well, except the fact that some board genius said I'm racist), but that place is already fukked and another hurricane, while it would cause new damage, would be far less devastating hitting there than somewhere new.
Either way, I hope a lesson was learned and those closest to the coast are no longer there. |

There were only (only!) about 1,800 left in the Astrodome and George R. Brown Convention Center early this week and they have already been moved to shelters in Arkansas. |

| Re: Another hurricane. Talking to my Mom right now. She's an RN at a local hospital. Their preparation is immense. Generators, fuel (with the plan to have enough for AC), water, boarding up entrances, extra armed security, water etc etc.
They are being sequestered in the hospital on Friday until further notice.
She also told me someone trying to evacuate had been carjacked at gunpoint on the 290.
What a mess. |

| Re: Another hurricane. It's starting to get serious - just heard on the radio that this is the third strongest storm ever recorded according to low pressure readings... only Hurricane Gilbert and the Labor Day Storm of 1933 (?) recorded lower pressures. Hopefully, this one will lose some punch and hit as a Cat 3 or 4.
I-45 is a parking lot and gas stations are closing left and right. All on-ramps and exit ramps are closed on I-45 to allow those from the storm surge area to get out first. We're planning on making the call to go or stay by noon tomorrow. |

As bad as the hurricanes were last year in Florida, people are still flocking to buy property as close as possible to the beaches. It really pisses me off. When they do get hit, they will expect the local/stat/federal governments to help them rebuild their homes. I call Bull **** on that one.
I have lived in Melbourne, FL all my life. I can remember driving down A1A. You can see the beautiful beaches. Now it is littered with condos. I say blow the fuggers down and keep them that way. |

| Re: Another hurricane. With the forecast shift overnight, we moved from the "dirty" side to the not-so-dirty side. It's impossible to get out of town now... I've heard estimates of 24 hours to get to DFW - which is normally a 3 - 3.5 hour drive.
Wish us luck... we are about 80 miles inland and will be riding it out. |

That's what my Mom kept talking about, "We just hope we don't get the dirty side". |

The storm is 140 miles wide so if it makes landfall along the forecast track, that keeps Corpus outside of the immediate firing line.
Latest wind estimates that I heard for our local area are for winds 60-90 mph with gusts in the 90-100 range. Stiff breeze, for sure.
Got plenty of bottled water, canned food and so we should be covered. Been spending the morning gathering flashlights and moving potential projectiles from the patios to the garage. |

That's what happens when you put a sissy Californian in the path of a hurricane.

I live on the second floor of an old, small, non-brick apartment so I am playing it safe by taking my cat and going to stay with my gf's family(brick house) for the weekend and hope everything is still standing when I get back. |
