LOOKING FOR MECHANIC IN SOUTH/CENTRAL ALABAMA

I have a 2002 954RR and it is making a loud knocking noise. The engine has only 5500 miles on it but I took it to a dealership and they told me it sounds like a bad rod and it would cost me about $2000 to fix it or I should find me a used engine. But I talked to someone else and he told me if it is only 1 bad rod and there is no hole in the engine case it would be an easy fix just to replace the bad rod and cost me maybe $700-800. I'm in college and my funds are very limited so I'm looking for a mechanic who's honest and reasonable and won't try to rob me like those dealerships!

IS THERE ANYONE IN ALABAMA/FLORIDA PANHANDLE AREA WHO CAN HELP ME????

How long has it been knocking? You aren't still riding it are you? If it "is" a rod bearing the rod might still be salvageable. Stock rods can be resized. Rod journal on your crank is probably toast and will need to be repaired (around 200 bucks at Falicon). How far are you willing to drive? I just bought a house and only have a small shed so I stopped working on stuff til I can get a new garage built. I have a buddy that might have time to do the work for you. He is experienced with 54's. We are about an hour above Huntsville, AL in Winchester, TN. Let me know and I can call him and see if he has time to do it.
