Tampa bay area. New tag BS!

Well I got stopped Saturday night and they told me my tag location was illegal, I have an 04 CBR1000RR with aftermarket exhaust and had it mounted underneath right above the rear hugger, It had a light on it also and was clearly readable from 100 feet away. I didnt get a ticket but he said it had to be changed. I was going to try and buck the system but decided not to and made a bracket to relocate the tag to the rear most point under my exhaust. I would rather spend more time riding and less time getting hassled. I have a friend that just won't change his and says he just won't ride until they reverse this stupid law.

Anyone else having issues with this tag law????

Re: Tampa bay area. New tag BS!

I've heard of some riders getting tickets for license plate, lights and reflectors not mounted or installed "properly" as stated in Florida statutes since the October 1st law amendments, that's why I mounted everything according to law. I don't see the reasoning behind your friends decision to "buck the system" since it is not such a difficult thing to mount the license plate to the most rearward part of the bike, add a L.E.D. license plate bolt and a red reflector. Seems like the system is actually bucking him if he doesn't want to ride in this excellent weather we have had this week. I'm not exactly happy with the new laws either but I'm not going to give a $1133.00 donation to Florida for the first offense, $2633.00 and 1 year of revoked license for the second and minmum $5733.00 and ten years of revoked license (mandatory court, 3rd degree felony) for the third. Consider yourself lucky this officer just gave you a warning.

Re: Tampa bay area. New tag BS!

I hate no idea about this. This country is going in the toilet. All the terrible things people are doing and the govt in concerned with bikers putting their tags under the tail. I was in the XKR the other day in bumper to bumper traffic. A trooper comes along side looks at the car, pulls aside me and forward, looks in front of the car to see if I have a front tag which I dont and pulls me over for it. Now I was doing NOTHING wrong at the time and this guy checks around the car for something to pull me over for. I even had the tag and bracket in the boot and told him so and that it got knocked off, still got a ticket. All the stuff going on and troopers are cruising around cars in traffic looking for no front tag so they can pull them over. Funny, had I stolen the car had a dead hooker in the boot under a pile of crack illegal guns and kiddy porn been driving on one bare rim and shooting a handgun out the window there wouldnt have been a cop within 20 miles.

I AGREE COMPLETELY!!! I told him that he has let them win, since what they really want is us off the road anyway! I for one enjoy riding too much.
If it means mounting the tag differently so be it! I saw 3 bikes pulled over yesterday within 2 miles of each other, I noticed all the tags were "illegal"
Hopefully this idiotic law will get changed but until then I will wave and give a quick rev when I pass other bikes that have been stopped for being stubborn.
Hopefully someone with some money will challenge this in court and then post and tell the secrets!

Re: Tampa bay area. New tag BS!

What these laws really do is give the LEO's something to pull you over initially which in turn gives them a reason to further check you out . The license plate law has been in effect for quite a while, it's the penalties that have become outrageous. As for changing the new laws, I doubt it. There was an ABATE meeting in Tallahassee when the laws were protested and there was somewhat of a victory, if you want to call it that. Lobbyist from the Hillsborough Co. section went there and protested the 30 mph over the speed limit law which was directed at motorcycles only and had that changed to 50 mph over directed at all motor vehicles. Also protested the "wheelie" law which added the accidental factors of the front wheel leaving the ground. So, we as motorcyclist in Florida are not happy about this, at least it isn't as bad as it could have been. Cup half full if you will.

Re: Tampa bay area. New tag BS!

I read a story years ago about the future. Apparently travel on the roads was so closely controled that you couldnt speed at all over or some such thing. These guys decided to have one last run before handing their testies over to the establishment so they took a race bike in a van out to the highway and did a full out run down a strech of road. Seemed funny at the time... not so much now.

Re: Tampa bay area. New tag BS!

Yeah, if you look at the statutes the tag placement has always been there, so quite a few of us have ALWAYS been illegal with the tags, but these new fines are causing the LEOs to enforce the law now, (maybe they are on commission, LOL) I have had tag violations on 4 wheel vehicles before and never had an $1,100 fine, The other states are laughing at Florida.
I mean cmon, enforce the tag placement fine, but $1,000 ticket???? I'll pull out my crystal ball here.... hmmm, I see MANY RUNNING!!!! MANY ACCIDENTS and FATALITIES!!! I mean lets face it, I moved my tag because I don't have the money for that fine, I would have to sell the bike to pay the fine.

Exactly what will happen too. I wouldn't normally flee but I can't afford a fine like that either.

Re: Tampa bay area. New tag BS!

I talked to a pinellas county deputy Saturday night and asked him about my tag placement (i have it mounted under the pipe now) I also showed him where I had it mounted above the rear hugger and he said that would probably be ok also, as long as it can be seen from 100 feet away, but he also said it is really up to the descretion of the officer. Here is a pic of how mine is mounted now, I made this bracket out of aluminum.

Re: Tampa bay area. New tag BS!

A close friend of mine just got busted with a tag that was horizontal but tucked up in his fender with no plate light. the state trooper that got him cited him for the improper placement law and gave him a 1000 ticket. The thing is the law that has the 1000 fine only refers to horizontal placement only, not visibility. Look up the statute for yourself and see. There is a separate law for your tag being visible for 100 feet and 50 feet illuminated at night. there is also no existing law for tag placement that is directed for motorcycles with the exception of the vertical tag law. The only law in reference to tag placement is directed towards cars (but applies to motorcycles i'm sure) and has general provisions such as the tag must be within a certain number of inches of the center of the vehicle and has to be above a certain height and below a certain height. I believe 95 percent of all motorccles would meet these placement requirements as the rear fender suze of most motorcycles are well below the minimum distance a plate has to be centered.

His attorney is seeking to have the 1000 fine dropped to the 100 feet visibility citation which if i am not mistaken is a non moving violation. He belevies there is a great chance of this happening, although he did say the officer could argue the intent of the law is to make the plate visible.

I will post results.

Re: Tampa bay area. New tag BS!

Just a followup.. they dropped the ticket completely because he was cited improperly, so for future reference you guys might want to challenge the ticket if the tag isnt vertical.

I ride a 919 with a stock mounted license plate. About a month ago I was ticketed because one of the OEM plate bolts covered 1/3 of my registration sticker. The cop said if he wasn't in such a jolly mood he'd ticket me $1000+ instead of the $200+ he issued me. Dick.

I hope you did not pay the ticket because if the plate bracket and bolt was oem there is nothing they can do, when any motor vehicle is designed for a modle year they are designed to meet the federal requirements and no state law can over ride the federal laws.

Man thats BS. they put the sticker spot so damn close to the bolt hole on FL tags its nearly impossible not to cover up some of it... and its the law to put it on the right side in that indented sticker spot. Not like the sticker is useful to them anyway since 3 seconds after typing your plate into the computer they can see if its expired.. plus you would have to be an eagle to read the sticker from more than 10 feet.

I can see the OEM stance with the tag bracket if they ever ticketed for that...but I dont think there is an OEM Honda license plate screw. I think dealers buy different kinds to stick on there once sold. I have three different kinds on my bikes and no OEM part numbers to be found.

However the issue of.... stickers can only go in the corner right next to the holes for the lic plate screws is a different story.

Keep in mind..the govt has to increase fines/laws to be able to afford the current employees and the ones they will be adding. It is the olny business that can print money and erase/create debt as it pleases.

Right. FL just upped ALL of their DMV related fees due to the state taking in less money, and since there is no income tax it had to come from somewhere. Most fees have gone up at least 50 percent.

I just don't see why stickers should still be used. With all the technology we have in place it just isn't necessary. If I'm not mistaken a couple of states don't use them anymore..
