99 CBR 900 RR-X, ignition switch problem

Hi all!

I have a problem related to my ignition switch. The key is getting worn and difficult to turn sometimes, so I was thinking about replacing it with a simple on/off switch hidden somewhere inside the fairing. The problem is that according to the wiring diagram there are 4 wires going into the switch.

1: Fan
2: Ign
3: Bat
4: VC

The 3 first wires get connected when the ignition is on, but not the fourth. According to the wiring diagram it is connected to the Ignition Control Module and nothing else. I tried starting the bike with just the 3 first wires connected, but it won't start. So here comes my question: what is this wire VC for and how can I connect it when I remove the ignition switch?

I have checked wiring diagrams for the older RR's but they don't have this wire.
I scanned the wiring diagram and it's the pink wire

jees your taking a chance putting a hidden switch in, if some scumbag sees you switching it off they'll try rob it,, should be able to get an ignition and new key on ebay

Problem is that this ignition switch only has three wires and not the fourth pink one. But thanks for the link anyway

The other alternative is to put another barrel in (or if it's the key, get a new one made up).

I just got a whole ign key, gas cap, and tail lock for my 93 fireblade on ebay. Came from china, looks actually very good.. I'm going to put it in maybe in a couple of days. My bike came jacked up with different keys, and the locksmith is going to charge me $70 to rekey.. so I went this route when I stumbled upon it. Turns smooth, parts look quite quality, so I think I did good on this one..

As long as they knew about putting in the diode when they made it

I guess I'll figure it out if it does not start Seeing as I have the original ign that works I am assuming i can take the wiring harness apart to find the diode if so? Well I guess I'll change the ign first before I go through with the other locks.

Just bringing this threadback to life, I'm bulding a streetfighter out of a 99 blade and want to replace the standard ignition switch with a remote control unit operating a relay which will turn on the ignition system. I have it all up and running but no spark because the system has no diode in it. I still have the standard ignition switch can I just unsolder it andfit it inline in the pink wire?

The ignition HAS to have the pink wire and the diode init ! Else it wont te the ecu to spark, had this trouble on mine. U can unsolder the diode and solder it back into the wire no problem but it MUST be between the red wire and the pink one as its sends something like 9v to the ecu. Honda did this to stop people from hotwiring the bike as it wont run without that diode being in the system.
The ignition switches from ebay are a complete waste of time as they dont have the pink wire so therefore your bike wont start !
