HID switch

Has anyone ever installed a switch for the headlights so you can start the bike without the headlight coming on. I installed an HID kit and then installed a switch using wire from behind the fuse box. The switch works but the bike wont start unless I turn the switch on with completely defeats the purpose. After the bike is running if i turn the switch off it will stay running
Thanks if anyone can help

Re: HID switch

I just installed a set of HID on my 03 too, I’ve been a little skeptical about battery consumption but I have an idea that I wanted to try .. again .. Just an idea.. you can try to wire both headlights directly to the Hi beam switch so if that switch is off it should be able to start with out the lights on

darn, darn....I covered this one already. Just turn on your ignition and let the bulb stabilize for 20 secs before you hit the crank switch. I had HID's on my '03 RC for over 25000 miles without one problem. Now you don't have to go tearing up any of your electrics, and waste hours of work for no good reason.

You live in New Orleans...You should ask me about my "evade switch".

Re: HID switch

I know I'll get flack for this, but....

When I installed my aftermarket undertail, All the LED lights in the rear had only 1 ground wire. So I threw in a NC relay and wired a switch to the front of the bike. If I had to "evade and escape" for any reason, it cut off all lights in the back including the brake light. I wired it to where if any part failed, the the lights would operate normally.

Just make one. Not hard at all if you have an undertail. The minumum you need is a small 2 amp switch. The maximum is a switch and a relay.

And I noticed you are worried about your battery consumption with your HID's..? Well they each use 20 watts less the normal bulbs. So that's 40 watts total, or 3.3amps less then normal bulbs. I don't think you have to worry about running your battery down.

Re: HID switch

I should be able to get the 2 amp switch and relay from Radio Shack ? How would i wire all the lights to the "evade switch" (thats the 2 amp switch ?) ? I know you said you posted it up recently, can you send me to that post? Thanks again for the help ..

First, do you have a stock undertail? If you do, then it would be a pain for me to wire it up. If you have an aftermarket undertail, you have to locate the ground wire(s) for the brake, tail and license(if you have it) lights.

If you aren't sure which wires are ground, do this:

Remove the tail fairing!

Find a multimeter. Turn it on to VDC (volts DC)

With the bike ignition ON, grab the wire you suspect is a ground and then hook one lead of the MM to that, and the other lead to the BATT(-).

If that wire is a ground you should read almost no voltage. 12V or so would mean it's a hot wire(the wrong wire)

Do this for the tail light ground, and the brake light ground. Remember, you have to squeeze the lever for the brake light(use a zip tie to hold it).

Now before I go any further, go remove the tail faring, take a close look and let me know if you can handle this.

Re: HID switch

I was thinking of getting a HID kit to install on my bike. How hard are they to install? Where should I buy the kit from? (there is tons on ebay) Where did you mount the ballist for the lights?

Re: HID switch

I found it very easy .. my only issue was finding a location of the ballast .. try this item number on ebay 170317724028, I used the same brand for my 03 RC51 .. I screwed mine directly under my headlights .. everything else is plug and play .. good luck ..
