Radar Detectors

I'm looking for a detector that's ideal for motorcycles. I'd need one that can detect most traps and has an effective warning system.

The Belltronics has been recommended to me, howhever it's not rated too highly:

http://www.epinions.com/Bel_Tronics_...splay_~reviews

Is it true you can conceal the detector inside your jacket and it's just as effective if it were mounted to the front of the bike? If this is true, I'd want to go cordless.

So what do you guys recommend?

Barna

Re: Radar Detectors

Valentine One is top notch I'm sure, but is it practical on a motorcycle? I don't think I'd hear the audio warnings when blasting at 100mph and I don't think it has jacks for earphones.

Re: Radar Detectors

I have a '98 blade, and I have the Valentine1 mounted in that cavity under the headlight/above the fairing. I have the remote indicator module mounted at the forward-most part of the windshield with 2-sided tape, just above the tach, in line-of-sight. I also have the (http://www.legalspeeding.com/) HUD mounted in my helmet.
And check this place out (http://www.saeng.com/cockpit.htm) for mounting harware for detectors or GPS or what-all.

No warrants with my name yet!!

You can get the Remote Audio Adapter from Valentine. Then you can use headphones. It will set you back an additional $49 over the price of the V1.

I've got the beltronics 990 international in the car and soon to be on the bike and it works fine for me- Laser is a bit hard to detect as it's very short bursts from the gun generally.

I'm in Australia though so don't have access to the V1s that everyone raves about here, I'd like to get mine mounted on top of my headlight in the cavity behind the speedo but I've yet to devise a way of doing so, otherwise I'm going to mount it from the left hand mirror mount under the fairing. I'm going to make a system similar to the legalspeeding.com HUD system, but with a wire (only becasue they don't make one for the Bel.) I'll let you know how I go.

I would imagine it would work fine in your jacket but won't be as effective as if it was facing forwards. cordless detectors will never be as good as their powered versions, I'd go with the powered version if I were you.

cheers

Ben.

Re: Radar Detectors

My system is expensive, but not as much as a traffic award I could get from the local speed warden.

I have a Valentine 1. If you are serious, don't even think about price shopping, just get it. The V1 is the best money you will ever spend. I have it mounted on a RAM. There is just no way that you could do better.

I am more than half deaf, so hearing the beeping does not matter to me. I have the H.A.R.D. system which I like a bunch. I highly recommend it. If you think a HUD is cool, you will like this.

These three things (V1, Ram mount, Hard) have made things so easy for me to ride. Yes, my system is expensive. No argument there. But it works. So think about it, thinking is cheap!

Re: Radar Detectors

The solo 2 is a great device however watch out in Canada as they have detectors for them. That is how they got mine. They will take the detector and give you a fine.
There is no radar detector made yet that is invisable to what the OPP use.

Supposedly the Valentine is not detectable.

EDIT: I stand corrected

Re: Radar Detectors

The police can detect radar detectors with their detector detector, but I think the valentine can detect them with their detector detector detector. So I think it's safe until the police come out with a radar detector detector detector detector. Unless Valentine can come up with a detector detector detector detector jammer. MY brain hurts.

Re: Radar Detectors

well here in Alberta they are legal, not sure which province you're in. I know in Ontario they're outlawed, not sure where else. When the cops are using instant-on laser it's nearly impossible to avoid it even with the best equipment.

I think the V1 is the best, but that's only based on what I've read in Car and Driver.

Another question; when you see the alert comes on the best is to turn it off or you keep it on all the time?

Thanks

Valentine is continually upgrading their detectors. They have an upgrade program so you're unit will never be out of date. The size of the detector may be a little bigger than other manufacturers, but the arrow indicators makes it worth the money.

Re: Radar Detectors

However the Valentine is a hard wire unit.
If you are pulled over in a non radar detector area and they see the chord or anything they can search your ride and if done by the book can get you unless you threw the unit out a window or something.
With the Solo 2 you have no permanent fixings that can get you in trouble.

Turning it off when you get a beep will do nothing they will already have you. When I was caught he was not running radar just detecting for detectors. He saw my suction cups and that was all he needed to search my car. He did perform an illegal search on me but I had way bigger fish to worry about that day then my detector being confiscated and a court date.

Re: Radar Detectors

I got Bel STI. For my R1. It not detectable by RDD. Leos in Ontario pretty serious if they catch you with one. $170 fine plus automaticly speeding ticket. Your insurance may go up too, all depence who you have.
I'm just trying to figure out where to mount my STI on the bike. Thinking use velcro and mount to front of the shield. But detector will be facing down. Not sure what it will do to performance of the detector. The reason i want to mount there so i can take the detector off before i get stoped. If you have detector on you they can not search your body (Ontario). Any sugestions where i can mout the detector so it wont be visable if Leo parks beside me at the light?

Re: Radar Detectors

I am fighting the issue of where to put my detector as well. I love the Stem Stands by Techmount, but if I ever go with a steering stabilizer, I would have to remove it. There is a mount that legalspeeding.com has that seems like it would work well that looks like it would bolt to one side or the other. I'm going to check my bike tonight and see if I think it will work, and maybe go that route.
Another good refrence for radar detectors and such is radardetector.net
I'm on their forum.

Valentine 1 is good were it legal. Here in Canada Ontario detectors are ilegal so i had to go with Bel STI. Performance is the same as Valentine in some parts even beter and it not detectable with RDD.

Re: Radar Detectors

For me, the V1 is not a good option. Most of my driving is more in town and on the loop that goes around town. The V1 would drive me bonkers as many false readings as it gives. ESPECIALLY if I had it mounted to the bike. That would be way too distracting. The Escort 8500 X50 is much better solution for both my driving and motorcycles in my opinion.
Now, if I were out more in a rural area where the thing wouldn't false so much, then I might change my tune. And xdx is right. The STI is the best detector for places where they are not legal as they don't leak like many other detectors do making them tougher to find with a RDD.

My apologies for posting to an old discussion, but....

Since the "internet" is considered by too many as "THE AUTHORITATIVE SOURCE" for information, I need to comment.

You are grossly misinformed regarding Valentine radar detectors. That's just the way it is. Your implications are way off the mark in terms of the reality of V1s and their performance.

If you don't want false alerts, BUY A V1. It's that simple.

All radar detectors will false, but the V1 is the one LEAST likely to false compared to the current crop of competition.

I've owned lots of radar detectors, and the list includes both the Escort 8500 and the 9500ix...suffice it to say I'll never buy another Escort. The 9500 I owned pissed me off so thoroughly it wound up in the garbage. I still have the 8500, but it's in storage...I don't use it.

The performance of the V1 is so far beyond anything else on the market it's laughable. And there are low-cost add-ons to give audio output to mixing devices and remote displays, both of which I employ on the system I have installed on my Goldwing, to give maximum flexibility to whatever installation one desires.

V1 falses? Well, as I previously noted, it's a relative issue, they ALL do it, but, the V1 is the least likely to do so . If you want to try to trash Valentine products, you'll have to use some other avenue.

I own three of them. I wouldn't trade any of them for anything else, and I have tried the top-of-the-line competition. Valentine is the one the others want to beat. And "RadarRoy" doesn't show it as the leader in his "top performer" list because Valentine sells direct. He can't buy them wholesale and make a mark-up profit on them. Pay attention, people.

Edit: AND, while I'm at it, for anyone contemplating the Adaptiv TPX - I'd advise against it. It's a falses BIG-TIME. I'm looking at options available to swap one of those off my Boss Hoss and add a V1 to that bike.

A big

The V1 is the one you want. Mine has saved me more than a dozen times

It isn't......true, that is. Radar travels line-of-sight, and the receiving antenna has to be pointed roughly at the transmitter (radar gun) for best reception. IOW, the front of the radar detector should be pointed towards the front of the vehicle for maximum reception.
