Regulator causing main fuse to blow on cbr900rr
Hey,
After filling up with fuel at the local petrol station, to heavy frustration, the bike wouldn't start. No lights come on at all, no oil light, no neutral light, nothing. I checked the small fusebox first, nothing wrong, then the main fuse (30A) and saw it blew, but as soon as I put a spare one in, it blows immediately even with the ignition off.
After doing alot of tests i found that it is the Regulator that's blowing it (main fuse). So I unplugged the regulater and all is fine, well except the battery is not charging. The regulator was the last thing I thought would blow as I just replaced it with a new one 6 months ago.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening ? is there maybe another electrical part that I should replace (as well as regulator, off course) to prevent this from happening again ?
I have a cbr900rrx (1999 model).
I couldn't find any post about this, if there is one, please point me to it.
Thanks in advance..

Regulators and stators are very common failures on Honda sportsbikes.
I'm not aware of a "fix" for it but I've heard of people replacing them with other manufacturer's items.

Re: Regulator causing main fuse to blow on cbr900rr
I always stick on a Fazer 1000 reg/rec. Seem to be much beefier. Two B/birds, a Suzuki GS1100, the Yam FZR600 I rebuilt, all running well with (fingers crossed) no recurance of failure. This in the last six months, done plenty before that and none have not come back with irate owners.

Re: Regulator causing main fuse to blow on cbr900rr
After goin thru 5 regs on my 99, the last one goin up in smoke & blowin 30 amp fuse at starter relay, i did sum research an upgraded to 99 R-1 rec. It is twice the size of my 900 stock one and all finned for much better heat dissipation! No probs since, got off ebay $25
