uk bike shops and points of interest

Hi to the U.K.
I will be in the UK in Feb/08. I will be in the south west (cotswolds)and up to Newcastle on Tyne. Can you tell me some of the best and biggest places to try on gear and helmets, see bikes and just take in the bike scene. Has anybody been to Westgate Hill in Newcastle and is it worth a visit.
Thanx in advance for any help.

Re: uk bike shops and points of interest

George White has a big store in Swindon has new Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki, clothing there too.

Hein Gericke is usually a good place to shop for gear and accessories; there is a fair few shops in the UK and plenty on your planned route between the Cotswolds and Newcastle.

Unfortunately the time of year means that there won't be any big meets on unless the weather is unseasonably mild. The Foodstop cafe at Quatford, (A442, Kidderminster to Bridgnorth Road) usually has bikes there on a weekend regardless of the weather, the owners are bikers and will make you very welcome. There is also a regular meet at Sherburn In Elmet, just off the A1 close to York although I'm not sure of the exact day.

Give us a shout closer to your visit and I'll check the press to see if I can give you more detail.

We're in the Midlands so give us a shout we may be able to meet for a beer

Re: uk bike shops and points of interest

Thanks Hondachunk
We will for sure go to George White's in Swindon. Its a 20 minute drive from my daughters house. We also plan to go to Westgate Hill, in Newcastle, probably after a football match. My daughter says if I call it soccer then I have to stay home. Thanks for your help. I may be coming back in the summer of 2008 to attend a riding school if I can set it up. Thanks again. You never know we may share a pint of ale in the future.
Cheers

Fowlers in Bristol is worth a visit if you're in that area. It's one of the biggest bike shops in the country, and they have a cafe on the top floor.

Re: uk bike shops and points of interest

Thanks AndyL
Been there and done that. Fowlers was a super good shop. I don't think I have ever seen so much gear ( I think you call it kit ) and bikes. I told them where I was from and then tried everything on in the store. Actually that would have taken a month. George White's was great and West Gate Hill in Newcastle was a little rough but worth a visit. Hope to return some day.
Thanks a bunch
