UK - 50mph limit for rural roads

Saw this in Motorcycle news - I guess this means a camera at each end of the road and start and arrival times compared to give and average speed. Looks like we'll all be stopping for an awful lot of sandwiches in the future!

50mph limit for rural roads

By Steve Farrell
Politics & the law
09 March 2009 17:26
The speed limit on single carriageway rural roads is to be cut from 60mph to 50mph under government plans announced yesterday.
The lower limit is to be enforced by a new generation of average-speed cameras capable of catching motorcycles. It could be imposed by next year.
Roads minister Jim Fitzpatrick said the move was needed to cut the death rate on rural roads, where seven out of 10 car crash fatalities occurred in 2007.
The 50mph limit will be proposed in a consultation to be published this summer.

They know what they can do with that idea... and it will be rather painful and unpleasant if they stick it where I'm thinking!!!!

Re: UK - 50mph limit for rural roads

But think how much money they'll make with these new camera's.
Imagine - revenue from every road in the country - they'll have all those Billions lent to banks paid off in six months!!!

On another thread similar to this where someone said about the revenue the camera's make, why not build more race tracks Now that would keep all the speeders from the roads and onto the tracks. I guess they like the money too much

If they set this up on every rural road they will be broke in no time - the equipment is expensive.
Most likely they will set it up on a bunch of popular roads.

Popular roads will come first - the revenue from these will be used to set them up on further roads and so on.
Trust me, here in the UK they make a shed-load of money from camera's.
Only the Lord knows what they do with it all.

Thy're probably putting it towards bailing out the banks at the moment

Well if no one speeds past them they would lose money and stop it!

Its not just speeding camera's, they also make money from bus lane camera's, parking camera's, camera's that look at your number plate and check you have road tax, congestion charge camera's, low emissions zones camera's, camera's over your left shoulder, camera's over your right shoulder, getting up late camera's, too much sugar in your tea camera's, not enough sugar in your tea camera's - perhaps I'm slightly exaggerating but you get the picture.
All these sources of revenue can be used to fund new schemes such as the new and improved, all seeing, average speed camera's!

England is suffering from a huge dose of over legislation and general nanny state-ness.
