FS: Garmin GPSMAP 76S

Since I am upgrading to a Zumo, my old one is for sale.

This 76s is in near perfect condition. There is some slight wear on the face due to the ram mount I use on the bike. The wear is visible in the image below. There are no scratches on the display and no dead pixels. It runs on 2 AA batteries, with battery save mode on, usually last just over 12 hours.

I don't have the original box, but it does come with the original manuals and cable to hook it to your computer. It does not come with Mapsource software however. I had to buy it separately and want to keep that.

What I really liked about this GPS is the track log. It stores not only position and speed information, but also the elevation. The 10,000 point log is fully adjustable. If you are dirtbiking or riding the twisties on the street and want the log to reflect all the twists and turns, this one will do it. I used it setting points every 0.01 of mile. Gives you a very detailed log. It also graphs the elevation data and can be displayed right on the unit itself or in Mapsource.

Here are the details and features from Garmin's site.

• WAAS enabled, 12 parallel channel GPS receiver
• Built-in quad helix receiving antenna with remote antenna capability
• Electronic compass displays accurate heading while standing still
• Barometric sensor with automatic pressure trend recording
• Unit dimensions 6.2'' high x 2.7'' wide x 1.2'' D
• Display: 1.6''W x 2.2''H, high resolution FSTN, 4 level grayscale (180 x 240 pixels)
• Weight: 7.6 ounces with batteries
• Backlit display and keypad
• Battery life: 10 to 12 hours (typical use), two AA alkaline batteries
• Permanent user data storage; no memory battery required
• Water resistant, IEC-529, IPX7 (Submersible 1 meter @ 30 minutes) and it floats
• 1000 user waypoints with name and graphic symbol; 50 reversible routes w/125 waypoints per route
• Position formats include Lat/Lon, UTM, Loran TDs, Maidenhead, MGRS and user grid
• Audible alarms for anchor drag, arrival, off-course, proximity waypoint and clock
• Large numbers option for easy viewing
• Built-in basemap showing cities, interstates, coastlines and more
• 24-Mbyte internal memory for loading MapSource detail including BlueChart
• Trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed and more
• Elevation computer provides current elevation, ascent/descent rate, minimum and maximum elevation, total ascent and descent, average and maximum ascent and descent rate.
• 10,000 point automatic track log; 10 saved tracks let you retrace your path in both directions (750 points per saved track log)
• Course and speed filtering
• Built-in celestial tables for best times to fish and hunt, plus sun and moon calculations
• Compatible with most MapSource products, including BlueChart, Fishing Hot Spots, Topo and MetroGuide.

Re: FS: Garmin GPSMAP 76S

It routes line of sight directions. It doesn't auto-route like an automobile gps would. It was designed for hiking, etc.

Free bump....

I had one of these for quite awhile, it's pretty good unit for motorcycling and boating. Did many miles in the rain with it...very waterproof, and even floats...

That is a nice feature that isn't offered in any of the newer Zumo or Nuvi units I should add. So for what you are asking for it, it would make a good inexpensive route datalogger.

Since it doesen't have SIRFstar, you're odds of having a static point show up accurately even when stopped are pretty good as well, so just flip it on and go, then plug in when you get home and see where you were.

Those are some key features I will miss while using the Zumo. If it doesn't sell, I might just have to use both!

I can't believe these new units do not have a breadcrumb feature...that's really puzzling to me...

The Zumo does have a trip log, breadcrumb feature. It just doesn't log or display elevation data. The Nuvi does not have a breadcrumb log. I just bought one for my Dad for a Christmas gift and indeed it lacks elevation info and a trip log.

Im trying a friends Nuvi 660 for the week (he wants to know if he should keep it, and knows I am without now ) and it's a really convenient device, I Looooooooove the bluetooth speakerphone and phone integration built in.

But the lack of screen customization (not being able to move things/change fields) and breadcrumb'ing, and lame elevation really puts me off of this for some reason. Got really used to downloading the tracks off of my 2610/2720, actually came in handy once when trying to figure out an accident I was in (kinda cool) but apparently its gone with the newer models.

I'd toss out a grand without question if they could make something like the Nuvi with less 'features' and more of the stuff I used. But the way it is now, its an overpriced C320 with a translator.

Re: FS: Garmin GPSMAP 76S

Did you look at the GPSMAP 76CSx?

Has all the features of the 76s but with auto-routing.

I used a Nuvi 660 for a few days before I wrapped it. I liked it except for the reasons you mention. The Zumo can link to a bluetooth phone and ear piece at the same time. Not so with the Nuvi. I used the FM transmitter and it worked ok with my car's stereo (antenna in the front).

I used the track log in the 76s in court fighting a ticket a few years ago. The log reflected how tight the turns were.

Re: FS: Garmin GPSMAP 76S

The breadcrumbs (and ability to download them) is so central to consumer GPS, that I cannot imagine the corporate-think that went awry during the meeting where they decided not to include it...

I have found more good roads by exploration (and then later "finding" them on a map) with this feature than by any other...

What made you choose that one of the 76csx? Specs look pretty darn close. Near as I can tell the only difference besides the look is the 60 comes with a 64meg card and the 76 comes with a 128.

It just came down to form factor for me, the 60 looked the role a bit more and I liked having the controls /rubber stuff on the bottom.

Does the 76 have a belt clip holder? That was something I liked on the 60.
