How Do I Set Ignition Timing CBR 600

Hello,

I'm currently troubleshooting a non running cbr 600 engine.

I am trying to check if the timing is correct it may have been changed from previous owner.

I have taken the cover off and I can see the F and the T marks on the flywheel yoke, but where do i go from they're? I'm going to borrow a timing light off my friend.

I do have a spark but the bike won't start.

Thanks!
Chris.

Re: How Do I Set Ignition Timing CBR 600

do you mean set the cam timing? You can't adjust the ignition timing on a CBR, it's not a pre-unit triumph Get a haynes book, if you have a non-runner you'll need one.

I say check some easier stuff first - blocked pilot jets, fuel filter, crossed HT leads, duff spark plugs. Spray ether into the carbs, if it starts you have spark but no fuel. You may have spark, but it could be too weak or at the wrong point in the cycle.

If your battery isn't strong (12.8v is ideal at rest 24hr after charging, 12.4v is too low for anything) then it won't start even if everything else is good. Ideally get a car battery and try to start off that, it'll take forever to kill off a bike starter.

etc...

Re: How Do I Set Ignition Timing CBR 600

Hi!

Thanks for that answer.
Sorry I may have called it the wrong thing.

I'm trying to adjust the thing that sets when the spark sparks, We've removed the thing on the right of the engine and shows us that flywheel with the details T and the F markings on it.

I'm guessing this is the timing for the spark plugs?

Anyone know anything of what to do next?

Re: How Do I Set Ignition Timing CBR 600

It's the timing for the cams which I guess by definition is the timing for the sparks? You can not adjust the ignition it sparks at x degrees past tdc and that's it. You might want to check can timing if that been messed with but all else being good and barring valve/piston interface a bike will easily run one or two teeth out.

I reckon you're looking in the wrong place.

Which model of CBR600?
The ignition timing is done in the ECU based on a signal from the crank position sensor. To "adjust" it you would need to slot the mounting holes so you can move the sensor, or get a new rotor that advances or retards when the signal is measured by the sensor.

Re: How Do I Set Ignition Timing CBR 600

BR is right. So by default you can't knock the timing off short of doing it badly on purpose. Or short of knocking the cam timing really badly off but fortuitously not in the direction where you get p/v interface.

Therefore I'm right, your timing is probably fine, start looking elsewhere.
