Re: Sorry officier...didn't see you there...my bad

I was with 2 other riders and we went flying by a Albuquerque city bike cop who was in the process writing someone in a car a ticket. The last image I had of him was from my rear view mirror - standing next to the car with both arms raised. Helmet in one hand and ticket board in the other. Mouthing something bad I am sure.

I was lucking that day. Because I am sure had he been on his Beemer we would have all had court dates.

Chain, I own a 1992 "Special Service" 5.0 Mustang (only civilian owner)...I'm pretty familiar with what these types of cars usually get.

I'm not advocating running for the 5-0... But being on a 600 over a liter bike (unless its a new ZX10 or the super dooper R1) isn't gonna help you all that much when you are talking pure top end... Granted, a liter will get there quicker, but absolute top end, well, there isn't THAT much disparity, at least until this year (2004).

here goes: I remember the 954 not being faster than 169 or so... Some mags got 172, etc, etc... I have seen 600RR tests go consistently 162-164...

Whatever, point being; I think a stock Z will run 155 govenor limited, and thats 5th gear... A "police modded" version could easily run deep into the 160s on the top end. Granted, it won't get there that quick, but it'll get there... Cars, no matter how you look at them, are WAY more aerodynamic than bikes. The only way our bikes get to the speeds they do is by sheer power/weight brute...

Cool, I've always liked 5L 'stangs. My only advice is not to race one of the newer Camaros, however.

Just read this. My 5.0 would not do well against that....

I'll have to do my motor build first to school them.

One thing you guys aren't taking into consideration is that the officers that drive the Z28s are trained to drive them at top speed and drive at high speed pretty frequently. They drive their car every day they work and are extremely familiar with them. I doubt anyone on this board, including myself, ride their bikes 40 hours a week.
Experience and ability go a lot further than brute power and power/weight.

"I had 2 slight curves and then about a 1 mile straight. Im thinking I will just get on the straight and open it up and dust the trooper, then wait till he goes by and then go back home. WRONG! I hit about 160+ and the Z28 was still within 100 yards of me. It took what seemed like 20-30 minutes to loose him but after closer thought it was more like 3-5 minutes tops."

Guys. No one has caught on to the fact that at 60mph, his 1 mile stretch of straight road would only take 1 minute to chew up. At 160 this high speed run would be well under a minute.. <booming echo> Sounds like ..... Bullshit ..... to me!</booming echo>

Under a minute, as in, about all of 20 seconds. Good point Fig.

I say don't run. Unless you are doing something really stupid, speeding by a small amount and showing enough respect to pull over, most police officers will let you away with a warning. Thats just with my experience though. If you get tagged goin 100+ or something on a public road, not only are you an idiot, but they will try much harder to catch you and constantly call ahead to more and more units, until you eventually are caught, crash, or VERY rarely, disappear. Just my

Re: Sorry officier...didn't see you there...my bad

I was riding home one night after dark in a small rural town, and I came to a 'T' in the road a mile or so off of the freeway. Just as I'm stopping at the stop sign a county deputy screeches to a stop crossways in front of me blocking the intersection. Just as the county mounty is getting out of his car a state trooper comes flying up from the other direction, stops, and then says, "no that's not him" over the PA. County jumps back in his car and they both took off. I was just sitting there wondering WTF just happened.

Re: Sorry officier...didn't see you there...my bad

I dont know if this counts, but one night back in college I got piss arse drunk and got into a bar fight which they kicked us out (me and my "friends") and called the cops.

Well, I didnt stick around mind you! I put one foot in front of the other as fast as I could (seriously, I was telling myself that!) and I got away!

Chain, you'll have to let this one go as I'm sure a good 10-years have past.

In a straight line roll on, skill accounts for little. Curves, braking and obstacle avoidance is different...

Re: Sorry officier...didn't see you there...my bad

my friend is a city cop where i live and he also rides a 929. he told me that they were told to try and get the tag number but not to chase after the bikes if they start to run. my brother was clocked at 153 on an f3 a town over from me and they chased him down for almost 20 miles on back roads that he said he was going so fast threw the corners that his back tire was breaking out on him and he was praying to god just to let him live. he finally took a wrong turn and ended up on a dead end gravel road and he said the cop pulled his gun and shot in the air and said he was next if he didn't get on the ground. he was only 17 and i still remember how pissed my parents were when they brought him home from the police station. by the way, he use to drag cars at the drag strip and i've rode shotgun with him at almost 190 mph in a highly modified twin turbo 300zx that was pushin almost 700 horsepower and i'll tell you this, NOBODY NEEDS TO GO THAT DAMN FAST.

I dont care what kind of car a police department has or how well some officers think they can drive. There is a limiting factor beyond the capabilities of the car. HELLO! the STREETS...no runoff, innocent bystanders and on and on... The street is no place to risk your life or the life of the police officer who might be crazy enough to try to chase you. You both endanger EVERYONE else on the road. Pretty stupid. However, if you have a clear shot of the squid, TAKE it...

Good one symonjester on the "neighbors"
Cops around my town call the sportbikes "time machines". BTW - 5 of them own sportbikes GSXR1000, GSXR750, R1 (can't remember the others).

The stupidity lay with the fleeing suspect whose actions precipitate the chase, not with the officer. Your statements almost sound as if you find equal culpability when things go wrong. Yes, police officers have to use sound judgment in these instances, but there is one person and one person only responsible for the deaths in this case ... and it's not the cops who swear an oath to detect and apprehend lawbreakers.

Some might accuse me of being overly sensitive, but I pride myself on sound judgment, professionalism, and assertiveness. I've been in fully 28 police pursuits and I'm anything but some "crazy cop" hellbent on getting the badguy regardless of the end result.

I don't think your the only civilian to own a former special service 5.0 mustang. My uncle has owned one, sold now, and my grandmother had 2 former crown victorian cop cars. The 5.0 was quick as hell, I had a 89 Mustang GT with Vortech supercharger, and 3.73 gears, and his stang could keep up with mine. Mine ran low 12s on the 1/4 mile.

Chain, while I agree the cops wouldn't make a mistake had someone never run, that shouldn't mean the cop gets to mess up and not be held responsible. In giving chase, the cop is at least partially responsible if he/she kills someone say running a red light and T-boning someone.

I'm not advocating running, and I think cops need to usually give chase (or too many people would be tempted to run) but they should still be liable for their actions in the chase.

Of course I'm not. I have 4 friends that have them as well. I'm the only civilian owner of my particular car.

Since the cop Mustangs received no engine enhancements power wise, and most were equipped with 2.73's or 3.08's, either your uncle was a hot shoe and you had car problems (or were a terrible driver) at the strip, or he had mods he wasn't talking about.

He was always like a second or so behind. His car ran 14 seconds the same night I ran in the 12's. I thought the cop mustangs had some intake work. I can't remember if he had anything done to it, it was 5 years ago. I think my mustang ran 12.3 or something that night.
