929 aftermarket ignition

Hey folks. I need a suggestion for an issue im having. I broke my key off in my bike a while back and have been using the half part of the key to start it. I purchased a new ignition Set off ebay but it didnt have the diode in it even though it said it would work for my bike.
I found a thread on here about it and cut the diode out of the old one to solder into the new one but it didnt work. I soldered it to what was the pink wire replacement. I think i may have broke the diode and need another, but im not really sure. If i do need a new one idk how to decide which one to get one.

Re: 929 aftermarket ignition

Did you solder it the correct way around?

It is much easier to buy a new one as they are like less than a $1 usually.

I can't remember exactly what it should be but the ECU is looking for less than 9V. So a 3.3V or 3.7V Zener Diode should do it.

Re: 929 aftermarket ignition

Another way to out what CBR929RRY is saying. Diodes have a polarity and need to be installed in the correct orientation. Installing it the wrong way, the diode won't work. Consider them like a one-way valve. Install it the wrong way and nothing goes through.

Re: 929 aftermarket ignition

I got mine from Amazon.

And originally I had it wired in what I thought was right (from internet photos), but apparently had it in backwards. These Zerner diodes allow current flow in both directions, but will only step it down to the 9v in one direction. I banged my head against the wall for a while when I first installed it, but got it right in the end. Because my bike is a track only bike, I have no ignition key switch anymore, so I wired it right in line on the pink wire.

I soldered mine directly to the wire to. Does that affect how the ignition works? I may have soldered it backwards because i dint know the had an orientation. I will buy some online and give it another go.

Also does the amps matter? I see mostly 1/2 watt, and something about 2% voltage temp coefficient.

You'll only get spark from the ECU in one direction. If you had it in backwards it should still be ok if you just switch it.

Yeah, the 500mw is the one I used. Sometimes they say .5W, but it's the same. 3.7v 3%

Re: 929 aftermarket ignition

You need not order and wait buddy... this is a very basic component.

Go into any electronics part/hobby store and you'll find it. I don't know where you live so I can't say where to go. When I say electronics I don't mean where you get your TVs and stuff lol.

You'll probably find one within 20km of you. Maybe much less.

This is a true statement up to a point, however I went to 3 Radio Shack stores (our local small electronics stores), and they had a few variations, but not the 3.7 500mw.

I had to order it from Amazon.

Re: 929 aftermarket ignition

Radio Shack is no longer what it once was. It is now a Sprint store with some home electronics added in. They have also closed quite a few of the stores as well. Around here, even the electronics shops for the hobbyists have really dried up. Online shopping has forced the closure of these places.

Exactly right. Same situation here. We had 2 in town back in the day, and now there are only 3, spread out over a wider area of the state, but in conjunction with the Sprint store. Inventory was minimal at best. Sign of the times......

Re: 929 aftermarket ignition

Well, the electronics components business had to have a lower profit margin.

Radio Shack has filed for bankruptcy protection again:

Another 200 stores will close. The closest one to me at over 20 miles away. The closed the one at the mall and the other a few miles away in a strip mall.

It's a shame it's come to this. We've lost K Marts and Sears up here too. We've become so "lazy" that eventually all our shopping will be done via telepathy while we sleep and will never have to leave the house for anything. The next thing is motorcycles will be banned from road use........too much work to operate them safely
