| SaddleSore 1000 Serious inquiry: anyone ever done one? When? From where to where? On what bike? Did you get it certified? What was the experience like? What did you do right? Wrong?
Details, please. http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/ge...nt.cfm?DocID=1 |

| Re: SaddleSore 1000 Done a few 800+ days....so I feel a SS is within my reach. I would like to do one just for the heck of it...
Of course my desire to do so is completely irrational, which to me makes it a perfect moto milestone imho.... It's just like riding up Mt. Washington in the fog, or turning a X:XX laptime at the track.....objectively it means nothing, but subjectively we desire to do some weird things....

| Re: SaddleSore 1000 Just that one time from SC to VT last July, on the 954. Didn't get around to getting certified. I figured I'd be doing the same thing this year anyways. Even though my helmet fit great for shorter rides, it developed a couple of hot spots over the long haul, and became uncomfortable. Same with my earphones; by the time I got to VT (and back, for that matter), having them in my ears had become very painful. Probably the single worst issue was the frequent fuel stops (~170 miles per tank); you might want to consider re-re-jetting your carbs just for this trip, if your range has been reduced from stock. |

| Re: SaddleSore 1000 I did one last year on my 929. You can read about it here. I did get it certified, have the plaque in my office and the license frame on the bike. It's one of those accomplishments that I'm fairly proud of, particularly having done it on my 929.
The hardest part for me was remembering to do everything I needed to do at every stop. On a ride like that you don't want to get back on the road and remember "Crap, I forgot to drink water". The actual riding 1084 miles was not all that bad. |

| Re: SaddleSore 1000 Hey Chain. I've done two, one official, and one not official.
The official one was done on a 99 Bandit 1200S, 1064 (1703 kms) miles in just under 20 hours. I have that plaque hanging in my office, plate frame on the bike, pin on my coat, etc. I did it with a friend who was on an ST1100. We left Amherstburg, (just south of Windsor ON) 4:00 am, through Detroit, up I75 to Sault Ste Marie, over on 17 to Sudbury, south on 69, and on to the 400 to the 401 and home just before midnight. I feel the only thing we did wrong was choice of roads, very slow up north, and then coming south from Sudbury.
Last summer, I did the unofficial one. 2022 KMs (1264 miles) in 20 hours 39 minutes on the TLR. That ride was a blast, and was more fun, inspite of the fact that about 12 hours of it was in rain. That was from Moncton, NB (left 7:00 am) to home (Amherstburg, arrived 2:39, note time change from Atlantic to Eastern here). I followed main highways all the way and actually passed within a mile and a half of my sister's Condo in Montreal, but kept going. I had a total of 14 stops; twelve for gas, one to change clothes (like that was worth while) and one just 'cause. I talked to many people on the way who thought I was insane (maybe I was) and many who were really interested. I did this trip myself, and believe me when I say although there are advantages to both, I think the ride alone may be the quickest, not necessarily the safest.
Either way, it's an unbelieveable feeling of accomplishment and one you should try. If you want more info, let me know Chain. |

| Re: SaddleSore 1000 I think the farthest I've ridden in a day was from the Deal's Gap area back to Columbia. Seems like it was a little over 600 miles or something. I really don't care to go any farther than that.

| Why is that sad? I had a GS550ES for years. It was one of the most well behaved and comfortable bikes I've ever ridden. I would much rather put that kind of mileage in on a bike like that rather than a 954. |

Rejetting might help extend my tank range a bit, but I'm not willing to give up my current state of tune ... more horsepower and torque than a stock Honda RC51, not bad for an inline sport-tourer. The bike positively storms, and stopping at the 150 mile mark for a splash of gas and a quick stretch sounds like a good idea anyway. |

I sure hope I can do this in less time than the 20 hours you cited. Ick. I was praying for something more like 15 hour... |

Because at the time I was 6'3 and around 275... I had to keep it in 5th gear because it wouldnt keep speed in 6th.
Great little bike though.

If I haven't left for Michigan by then you'll have to stop by.

Great little bike though.
Chris | Ah, that makes sense. I think I was around 170lbs when I owned mine. To this very day it's the only bike that I've owned that I truly miss. Fun little machine. Smooth, peppy, perfect riding position, etc............
Chain, if you're gonna stop in mid Mo for lunch or something, give me a shout as well. |
