Buying a wrecked bike.

Anyone ever buy a bike from an insurance company as salvage? Any ideas how to go about it...finding the bikes and such? Just curious. Thanks in advance.

Ride Safely Salvage
I bought a salvage title SV650 from these guys in Pennsylvania. Had a fellow VFR lister go check it out, it was exactly as it had been described. Probably stunted to death, aftermarket clipons let go, dented the tank and dinged the frame superficially.

They were on ebay at the time and I got it for under 2000. w/ less than 9000 miles, now I'm replacing springs and valving, trying to get it on trackday duty. It cannot be titled for the street in Michigan, but it could have been fixed and re-streeted in many other states.

Now they do their own auctions and it's a bit confusing, though since I'm no longer in the market, I haven't studied the current protocols.

I think it was a pretty good experience, despite the Russian Mafia affect of the owners... They were straight up, actually.

Re: Buying a wrecked bike.

I had called my insurance company inquiring the same thing and atleast with State Farm they sell all their bikes to a contracted salvage yard if the owner doesn't want to buy it back from them. They don't/won't sell them to the public, you would have to go to a salvage yard.

Re: Buying a wrecked bike.

All I have to say is be careful.
Especially with newer bikes.

Frames are more brittle now that so much more of them are rolling out in almost one complete casting.

And you also have to watch out for frame dings and such. In some locals, a ding in the frame means no valid inspection, no matter where it is or how tiny.

Certainly do your homework on the bike.
