| Pirelli Diablo Corsa - Chunked @ the track See the attachment; This is after 91 track miles I get this plug missing from my rear wheel. Any ideas what could have caused this? I am leaning towards a bad tire conclusion... I need to get the bike off the trailer and double check the entire tire to make sure its not doing it anywhere else, but what you are seeing there is the belt itself, no tread remaining there...
Any thoughts? All input would be appreciated before I call/email Pirelli.

| Re: Pirelli Diablo Corsa - Chunked @ the track Almost looks like you ran over something...but I'm guessing you would have noticed...I have the same tire brand new with about 250 street miles and close to 100 track day miles and after reading your post I went out to the garage and went over the tire VERY CLOSELY...no probs here...other than the chunk missing it looked exactly like your tire. Please do keep us informed! Good luck.

| Re: Pirelli Diablo Corsa - Chunked @ the track Let us know what you find out. I've used several sets of the Diablo Corsas and nothing like that has happened. |

| Re: Pirelli Diablo Corsa - Chunked @ the track Is it the super soft compound? My dealer once dealer put the softest compound supercorsa's on my bike by mistake or something, and after a few hundered miles they were looking in pretty bad shape. Before I had the chance to change them the rear tire gave up on me (didn't crash luckily). Was riding along and it went down pretty quick, there was a tear mark in the tire about 3/4" accross in an L shape, I wasn't aware of hitting anything in the road so I'm not sure what happened. Anyway, the super soft compound tires are only designed to go through a few heat cycles before they're no good - basically qualifying sessions. |

| Re: Pirelli Diablo Corsa - Chunked @ the track I would guess you caught something in the tire. The rest of the tire looks fine from the pic. |

They don't come in different types of compounds. |

| Re: Pirelli Diablo Corsa - Chunked @ the track Surprising, especially coz the Pirelli's are a single piece of rubber, inthat there are no joins in the tyre like Dunlops and Michelins etc. So it ain't gonna be a "join" coming apart. Let us know what happens. But guys, don't go running out to see if YOUR tyre is the same. hahahahaha They've been selling millions of these tyres. If it was common, we'd know about it already. And like everything, there is never a 100% success rate with the making of anything. |

| Re: Pirelli Diablo Corsa - Chunked @ the track I would also like to know what you find out from a Pirelli dealer. From what I see in your photo the tire is fairly new and it was a big section that came out. The Diablo Corsa tires on my 1000RR are the first Pirelli's I have run and really liked them but do not want the same thing that happened to you. |

I'm not an expert on tire failure (or know anything about it), but the tires look like they're in good condition. I would think if the tire starts chunking, it would be because they became overheated. It's really hard to say. |

| Re: Pirelli Diablo Corsa - Chunked @ the track guys/gals...
I don't think this is an "across the board" issue with the Diablo Corsa tires at all.. I don't think I ran over anything, while it *could* have certainly happened... The tire didn't go flat, so if I had run over something, I'd like to think it would have pierced the belt as well, maybe not, but most likely... The missing rubber is also right on the tread sipe, which I find peculiar...
Temps were in the low 90s... Tire wear is good (as you can see in the pics) and traction was VERY good until the missing chunk exposed itself... |

| Re: Pirelli Diablo Corsa - Chunked @ the track Charlie and I were at CMP together and he came into the pits right after I did....surprisingly, he said he didn't notice it while riding! I ran Corsas as well and my set held up fine....I tend to think it was just a dud....hopefully, Pirelli will be more than willing to replace this tire, as they should, as promptly as possible...also, the track was damn near spotless...no debris whatsoever from what I could tell....although it was damn near 90+ degrees, the tire should not chunk like that on a hot track as it was made for high temps....keep up posted man....
P.S--oh yeah, I am so glad you didn't crash! *fingers-crossed*
<inside joke, yall>
not to thread-jack or anything, but I loved the Corsas...awesome tire!! I ran a 70 front for the first time and man, what a difference! in the very first session in first right-hander, I go to lean the bike over and it acts like it doesn't want to turn-in...I was like, "what the hell is going on here?? "....but after getting used to slower turn-in, I was able to pick up the pace and ran good all day long...I'm never going back to that bastard 65 front again!

I would have thought that they would be closer to Pilot Powers ie a tyre designed mainly for fast road use with occasional track days rather than like the Corsa which is supposedly 70/30 track/road.
I put the standard Diablos on, well actually a 180/55 rear instead of 190/50, and so far I'm very happy. Haven't done a track day yet though. I'm think of doing one at EC on 5 June.
Cheers
