brake bleeding

I suppose this is a nit-pick question but here it is.

When bleeding one's brakes does it matter if the pistons *the ones in the caliper* are retracted or extetended?

Curious because my rear wheel pads seem to rub the disc more than the front and since it's time to change fluid I thought I'd exercise the old OCD and ask

BW

You need to squeeze the brakes to bleed them under pressure. I believe the KB has the process posted. If not, you pump them, hold tight and open the bleeder screw. It will squirt out, the pedal, or lever will go all the way down and then tighten the screw. Repeat, repeat, repeat until all the air is out and it's nice and firm.

Uhhh, just in case...

Don't do this if the calipers are not mounted on the rotors.

I assumed he still had them on the bike.

Whatever you do, don't apply the brakes if the calipers are off the rotor. It will be hell pushing them back in. Not to mention, whatever you would use to do it will most likely damage it.
