dirt vs street

a friend of mine just got a 600rr he is a great dirt track rider but he is comming out on his first street bike and figures he knows it all "if you have some dirt experience under your belt, you can do perfect on the street.
street riding is actualy easy... There are just more things that can go wrong." yeah those are his words i am running out of things to use for reasoning with him. help any ideas what to say to keep him alive for the rest of the season?

Re: dirt vs street

Ask him how many cars are on the dirt track.

Seriously though... I wonder what he'll say when that first handful of gravel takes him out like no dirt track ever could. I guess some people just need to learn for themselves.

Re: dirt vs street

Try contrasting the pace and preditability of a trees movements verses a car, truck, pedistrian, pets and/or wildlife.

Change of road conditions; planks of 4x2 on freeways, (happend two days ago to a member of a local club), oil slicks, gouges in road surface on corners, etc

If you fall off its not soft dirt you hit, you may even be lucky enough to find some of those nice wire barriers, lovingly refered to as 'cheese graters' by the local riders.

speed cameras etc

If he refuses to listen, then just go with the "fair enough, but its your funeral" line and see if he takes stock then.

Dirt riding only gives you an advantage in operating the bike, not riding it. It is night and day. Most street bikes go faster in first gear than most dirt riders ride.

Get a pic of him going around a corner with his foot out

I think learning to ride on a dirt bike is the way to go, as far as getting used to operating a motorcycle. But like others have said, dirt and street riding are about as different as they can be as far as techniques (see Kuss929's foot comment) and conditions (cars vs. trees).

I have rode dirt and raced MX for 26 of my 34 years before starting street riding. I think dirt riding definitely helps you as far as the skills required to actually ride. But dirt riding also is usually more aggressive -- the general mentality of my MX racing buddies is if you don't crash occasionally you aren't trying hard enough.

Bring that mentality to the street and you will have a short riding career.
