can it be welded | The lower case on my 929 was cracked badly enough to take a chunk out, luckily I still had the piece. I had someone attempt to weld the cases up for me but I didn't get the results I had hoped for. I still have a very small leak that almost appears to weep right through the case. I fear that in my situation pulling the engine and splitting the cases to allow closer inspection and better access for welding will be required. YMMV
By all means I would try to have it welded. Finding a machine shop that will do the work while the engine is still in the bike may be difficult but not impossible.

| Re: crack engine case I guess that I should add that when I had the welding done that I did a few things to prep the bike for the welder.
#1) NO GAS
#2) No oil
#3) drained water/anti-freeze & removed hoses around area to be welded
#4) Pulled left side case cover (Leave stator bolted to cover... disconnect stator wire under seat)
#5) Pull flywheel
#6) Use something to block potential slag from going into crankcase (I used a Hi-Temp fiberglass tacky cloth gasket material that I have access to at work)
#7) Clean area extremely well with solvent (I used carb cleaner), there should be no trace of oil left.
If the crack extends into crankcase or oil galleries cases will have to be split.
(I'm sure I forgot something but this is a good start ) |

Also all of my plastic was removed. The welder laid the bike on its side in order to have better access to the bottom of the case. |

| Re: crack engine case Yeesh.. sort of makes you wonder what happened to cause that. But at 3k.. even if you need a NEW motor I think you are still ahead of the game (depending on bodywork issues). Welding Japanese AL cases can be tricky from what my journeyman welding neighbor tells more (porosity of the casting makes things difficult from what he explained - plus as metioned possibly contamination issues).
At any rate.. good luck with it and enjoy the bike. Bummer on the leak though.. |

| Re: crack engine case If that's the stator cover you can pull it off fairly easily. You have to give it a good tug to free the stator's magnetic grip. If it's got two gaskets on there it may be cracked more than it appears.
edit: just reread this thread. The oil drips you saw "may" only be from the foam padding on the inside of the fairing. Try wiping the area clean (stator cover) and look carefully to locate the source(s) of the drips.

| Re: crack engine case 4 quarts is more than enough. Stop and keep checking the level after you've put in 3 quarts so you don't overfill it. 10w-40 is standard grade.

| Re: crack engine case Looks very weldable to me.
I've done JB weld on dirt bike (and my 929's stator cover too actually) cases before, but it always cracks in time.

| Re: crack engine case They make a quick set that is done in like 5 minutes. Make sure you clean it very well, a metal bristle brush with break cleaner works good.
JB weld is always a temporary fix. Like I said, it will probably work for a while, but the difference in expansion rates of all the materials in the area will eventually crack it. |

| Re: crack engine case I can't really tell from the pics, is the tab that the bolt threads into cracked? If so, you can have it welded and rethreaded. Whether you use JB or have it welded you can save yourself some time by cleaning it yourself. Use a stainless steel brush and citric acid. Both of these can be purchased at a welding supply store. If you need more info let me know. |

| Re: crack engine case If you carefully put a board under the left side of your rearstand, no oil will come out when you take it off. Learned this doing trackside alternator cover rebuilding after a crash at Laguna. |
