LOST MY KEYS!!!

You would not believe the trouble that i am going through in order to try and get a key cut for my bike. I dont have another one sitting somewhere and i need one cut.

They say that they cant cut one from the number that are on my ignition cylinder and honda wont cut one from the VIN and send it to me. Does anyone have any ideas short of going to a locksmith and having them cut one by trial and error from just the tumblers?

Re: LOST MY KEYS!!!

When you got your keys (if you bought your bike new), you should have gotten a little metal tab with them that had numbers stamped on it. That was your key code. The dealer can cut you a key if you give him that code. You won't find that # anywhere else on the bike.

Think of it this way...if someone stole your bike would you want them to be able to have a key made by using any of the #'s found on your bike?

Only other alternative I can think of would be to purchase a new ignition but then you'd have to get new locks for the gas tank and rear storage.

Good luck.

Re: LOST MY KEYS!!!

well the good news is that a lock smith can fabricate a key for only $100 (ouch) and when you buy a new lock set, and they only come in sets, you get a new ignition, gas tank cover and rear seat lock $235 (more ouch)

Re: LOST MY KEYS!!!

Ouch is right! Don't forget to get a couple of spares made after you invest the $100. teast you found a decent alternative and saved yourself some $$ instead of having to spend the $200. I hope it all works out for you.

Re: LOST MY KEYS!!!

Hey there,

I wrecked my '95 and lost the keys. Needed to get the gas cap off the trashed tank as that was salvagable, so I took the ignition off the bike and went to my local stealership with it. They burned me a new key for about $15.00 as I recall. Dups were about $3.00/ea.
Might want to call your local dealer and ask about that before you spend a C Note with a locksmith.
My 0.02.

Oh man I went through that whole key nightmare last year with my F4i.....locksmiths are no good at motorcycle keys for some reason, well they weren't with mine anyways.

Re: LOST MY KEYS!!!

If you take the ignition apart and take that to the dealership they will read the last 3 digits off the code on the ignition and can look up your key code and cut you a new key. you'll also need to take you paperwork in on the bike i.e. title, registration, mother's maiden name , oh and wear some Honda gear when you go in to the shop, that should seal the deal

You should be back out in no time

Actually, if you take your ignition in with you, most dealers don't require ownership paperwork. It also has the benefit of allowing you to try the key in the ignition prior to walking out, guarateeing that it has been cut correctly.

The really funny thing is that there are only a limited number of Honda key codes. I've seen several instances where one individual's key starts another's bike.
