| Oh no . . . (UPDATED) A department wide e-mail just came out from our Public Information Office advising that a brother officer, the young guy I sold my SV650 to, the guy I nearly bought the same bike back from about six weeks ago when I was thinking "trackbike", was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident last night up in the Loess Hills north of the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro (where I do a majority of my riding). A woman in a van turned left in front of him and he hit her at speed, no time whatsoever to react.
I got through to a family friend who told me Steve's in very bad shape, a serious injury to his L7 vertabre, and will likely never work another day as a police officer. He may not even walk again.
They're operating on him today.
Keep him in your prayers, gang.

| Re: Oh no . . . Damn! Nothing you can really do right now but pray. It's a very difficult situation to deal with but keep in mind that you're not responsible for the action of the careless driver. Sure he was on your old bike but it was totally out of your control. Can't blame the situation on your decision to sell him the bike. |

Remember Chain if he didn't buy it from you he would have bought the bike from someone... Don't beat yourself up. |

| Re: Oh no . . . First, thanks a TON for the speedy and heartfelt remarks. I appreciate the thoughts and prayers more than you know. I'll be sure to pass along the good vibe if/when they allow Steve some visitors outside immediate family.
You're all correct of course, he'd have purchased another bike had he not bought mine. We all know and accept the risks associated with our sport. It's just that at times like this, it's hard not to reflect just a tiny little bit, maybe even question the intelligence of our chosen hobby, know what I'm saying?
Don't get me wrong. I'm not about to quit riding and I feel better about this situation already (again, thank you!). Besides, a guy can live completely "clean", never engage in risky behavior, choose not to smoke/drink/use drugs/engage in risky sexual conduct/etc., he can work out five days a week and eat all the right foods ... and STILL... a brain hemorhage or a car wreck or a lightning strike or cancer or any number of other things can take him out. Life's a dice roll at best.
Times like this call for us to take personal inventory of the grace we have in our lives. Friendship with this Fireblades gang is some of the good fortune I possess. Thanks. |

My best to Steve and his family. When I shattered L3,L4, and fractured L2 they said I probably wouldn't walk again either...hopefully that's just standard doctor rhetoric...Heal fast and fully Steve!

| UPDATE UPDATE
Just talked to someone who was at the hospital last night, another police officer who is tight with Steve. Apparently the truth -as is so often the case- differs from the first version of the event.
Steve wasn't on my old SV650, he was riding his recently purchased Confederate Hellcat on the interstate near his home (right across the Mormon Bridge over the Missouri River in the state of Iowa - for guys familiar with this part of the country). Anyway, a woman in a minivan apparently decided to flip a U and, without warning, swung into his lane and decelerated. This was apparently very abrupt and Steve had little time to react.
According to a couple off-duty EMTs who actually witnessed the accident and stoped to render aid (guardian angels! thanks fire/rescue guys/gals!), Steve appeared to purposely lowside the bike. The Hellcat caught, flipped over (him with it), and he went up in the air. He came down flat on his butt which caused a compression fracture of his L7.
According to what I've just been told, unless they dick something up in the operation, he'll likely make a full recovery (he had feeling and at least some movement in his lower extremities even last night in the trauma room). Thank goodness he was wearing a helmet, as it could have been alot worse (Iowa has no mandatory lid law). As to causation/avoidance issues, Steve is admittedly a relatively inexperienced rider, about two summers of street riding under his belt. Perhaps he was in the van's blind spot. Maybe he didn't have sufficiently safe following distance or didn't have the skill and trust in his bike or brakes to hammer the stoppers as opposed to dumping the bike. I don't know. Some of that will come out in the investigation which is being conducted by the Iowa State Patrol.
Still, this is exceedingly good news.
