| Re: A day in the life of Chain... Pretty good one Conq! I cannot believe that dork had a sandwich on his dashboard.
In candor, I'm not too big on war stories, but I'll share one here.
Two summers ago we chased a meth addict and carjacking suspect at high noon in downtown Omaha. He'd taken a claw hammer to a guy to get his Dodge Ram from him. What transpired was a ten minute pursuit across yards, down a railroad right of way, through a 6' tall chain link fence, across curbs and through busy city streets until the guy I was riding with and I used the PIT on him ( Pursuit Intervention Technique, a nice way to say you rammed the guy, lol). Then it was a foot chase which ended with the dude charging another police officer with the hammer raised above his head. The officer shot and missed but the baddie thought he'd been killed, dropped onto the ground clutching his chest ... and he pissed himself. One of the funniest things I've ever seen in my career.
The story within the story? During the chase, the suspect hopped a set of railroad tracks to get away from me (I was lead car in the pursuit at the time). Having been a rural county deputy when I began my LE career in the late 80's, I had been taught how to get over tracks in a Crown Vic. No kidding, it can be done. When I crossed them and continued the chase, I think he was more than a little surprised. In the interview room after the dust settled he remarked, "That cop that was behind me on the railroad tracks, he can drive!"
Sadly though, I cut a tire on the crossing and had to drop out of the chase. Not for long, however. I jumped into another cruiser that was only a little ways behind me.
Wore one pony out, got me another one...
Finally, I've got a cassette tape with the whole chase recorded (the audio that is). If it's possible to get it into some sort of media file so it could be posted here on the board, I'd be happy to mail it to you, Conq. Folks might get a kick out of it. |

The old saw is accurate, truth is stranger than fiction.
Now might be a good time to renew my offer to any Fireblades.org member who might find him or herself in Omaha on business or pleasure (no teasing, we got the CWS, a world class zoo, the Old Market and Husker football) to do a ride-a-long with yours truly. Lunch is on me. |
