Torque and Hand Tools

I've got a dumb question(s):

Does using a universal joint with a torque wrench affect the accuracy of the torque applied?

How about a crow's foot?

Help me. I'm old and confused.

Universal maybe a little, crowfoot definitely.

The formulae I have are as follows:

T(W) = T(E) * L/L+E
or
T(E) = T(W) * L+E/L

Where:

E = Effective length of extension measured along centerline of the wrench
L = Lever length of wrench (center of grip to center of socket drive)
T(W) = Torque set on wrench
T(E) = Torque applied by the extension to the fastener

Re: Torque and Hand Tools

Thanks abtech, I was hoping you'd reply. I never thought about the length of the extension affecting applied torque...just assumed that as long as it was straight it wouldn't matter.

So do you think it would be fair to say that using a universal would be no different than a straight extension with the addition of some (small) friction loss? I.E. no other changes due to different angles?

Crow's foot is still confusing to me...not sure how to account for the drive center being offset from the "driven" center. Sounds like a lever...and a multiplication of torque.

Re: Torque and Hand Tools

I position Crows foot wrenches at a 45 degree angle to the center line of the torque wrench. Starting with it fully extended out, turn it 45 degrees either left or right. It will be very close.

Re: Torque and Hand Tools

I'm an F.A.A. License Tech. W/20yrs exp. 45 degree on crows foot is wrong.
It has to be 90 degrees to the head of the TQ wrench if you want proper TQ.
