| CSC (MSF) Training Another weekend of training over and once again, I enjoyed the look on most people's faces when they passed. That's real cool and kinda makes me feel good as an instructor, especially when for some of 'em, it's the first time they ever wrapped their fingers around a set of grips. There was especially this one girl (about 19, I didn't see her paperwork) who rode her Dad's Fat Boy home after she passed and he drove her Jeep home. The look on her face was absolutely priceless.
Then there was this one Dude (His words) who, on SAturday, had on J/R boots, yellow Spyke leather coat, nice gloves (don't remember the brand), nice helmet (from a distance, anyway) and I heard him talking about how his "Suzy" was hopped up with bore kit, T/B Racing pipe, jet kit, etc. I didn't pay much attention to what he was saying, but he was trying to impress the young guys and girls in the class after they were all hanging around all the instructor's bikes on the lot entrance. (There was an R1, ZX1100, a Dyna W/G that this girl does 11 sec quarters on, and my TLR.) Then Sunday morning he shows up on his yellow Suzy he was bragging about. It was a freekin' Katana 600.
Now, you gotta understand, I don't (usually, it turns out) laugh at anything anybody rides, for any reason. A bike is a bike and as long as you ride, that's cool. But the way this guy was talking the day before seemed like the factory teams should come talk to him for hints, and then he shows on this thing with the tail piece cut off with a blunt saw blade and the plate ty-wrapped to the ragged edge just about made me piss my pants. The female instructor who was on for the weekend (she owns the Dyna, BTW) almost bust a gut.
The sad part was, when he got his certificate after listening to us preach safety for two days, this moron leaves wearing low runners, a tee shirt and no gloves!!!!
Whatever pal, have a good life.
These are the experiences that either make you look forward to the next weekend you teach and a new group of students, or in the case of Yellow Brain, makes you want to drink and say *Why the f**k do I even bother!!".
Thanks for reading my rant. |

| Re: CSC (MSF) Training Keep up the good work. The smile that you saw on the girls face is the reason you keep going back and teaching. Spread the gospel on motorcycle saftey. It is important to inform the masses on how to operate a cycle. Beside, if you don't, they may get their information from the squidly dude on the Katana.
Thanks for teaching. |

| Re: CSC (MSF) Training That is the stuff that keeps me teaching MSF classes since 1993 as well! Its the fun, if you let them know this HAS to be FUN they loosen up and try and enjoy themselves. If its all serious, they clam up, BORING! |

| Re: CSC (MSF) Training Newfie TLR, you have my respect for taking the time out to give basic training and spread the gospel on riding and riding safely.
Like all training / teaching / being a parent issues, all you can do is teach the right things, behave the way you want others to behave and let them get on with their lives, for good or squid .

| Re: CSC (MSF) Training Thanks for the post. Brings back good memories for me. I really enjoyed the 5 years I taught. The best thing I've ever done for the sport by far. Maybe when my kids get more independent I'll get back into teaching. |

| Re: CSC (MSF) Training Been on SAP training the last two days so haven't been able to post any response to the replies.
1./ Thanks for the encouraging remarks. The little bit of money we get from it is nice, I've bought a new lid, some other gear and a new driver from it, but that money doesn't in any way pay back for the 20-24 hours on a weekend in a hot parking lot and the time away from family, relaxation and golf. To see their glee when they pass, and then when they come up to you months later and remember you, it's kinda nice. Especially when you see them ride safely, with better skills than they had before they took the course.
2./ The Katana Squid, while does bother me a bit, is basically a distant bad memory by now and will never take place of the good memories of the students I have respect for.
3./ There is also a mutual respect between instructors, and it doesn't take long to get to know who's in it for the right reasons, and who's there and wearing the patch as a "Status Symbol".
All in all, it's a very rewarding experience, and one we look forward to over the snow-covered months.
Now, if they could just find something a little bigger than a Honda 250 Rebel for this 6'3" 290 # guy to do demo's on, life would be a little better.
Take care, ride safe.
Edit:
Oh yeah, as for the 19 year old on the FLSTF, hot just can't describe it. But I can't help but think "Cripes, she's younger than my daughter". OMG I feel like a perv sometimes.

| Re: CSC (MSF) Training I Think that I met the "squid" at tilbury honda yesterday, he was at the honda dealership doing the same thing that you had described, talking about how his "set-up" 600 suzy would stay with the new 600RR honda...when I asked him what year his gsx-R was he said that it was only a 600 gsx(katana) I just about feel over laughing(or at least I felt like it) then he heads over to my bike and starts talking about how he would rather have the gix 1000...good way to make a first impression...did I mention that this was at the honda dealership...I hope that this is the same kid because I hate to think that there is more than one katana that can "beat" a 600RR |

| Re: CSC (MSF) Training Taught another course this weekend. First time for me standing in rain for four hours teaching this course. That was an experience, but I was pleased that not one bike was dropped in the wet (understatement) conditions. This was my third weekend in a row on the course so I'm ready for a weekend off by now.
Labour Day weekend is coming up and that means the Club Championship!!
Now, if I could just win a lottery so I could have the weeks off and spend the weekends with either bikes or golf, life would be a little better!!
NO, Joel, no pics of me on one of these bikes!! I already get enough of "bear on a bicycle" and "Hey Buddy, you know you've got a Honda sticking out of your ass" comments. I can only imagine what some of the more creative people here would come up with!!! |
