So, I change the oil, fill the tank and add stabil, cover over the ends of the exhaust, clean, and cover. |

| Re: Setting your bike up for winter last year when I was riding a ZX6R I was a member of zx6r.com (suppose I still am but I forget myname and password and it doesn't campare to fireblades but still a pretty decent site) and they had a section on storing your bike for the winter, so the stuff it said and the stuff people here said go as such (not in any specific order):
1.change the oil and filter before putting it away because the acids build up in the used oil (they usually get burned but you aren't riding so they can't get burned) so put the in new stuff to absorb whatever is left in there then change just the oil when you take it out again.
2. drop a teaspoon of oil down each spark plug hole so that when yo ufire it back up that first time after the winter the rings will have some oil to lube them right away.
3. stuff an oily rag in your exhaust. oily because rats or any other creature won't try to eat through an oily rag.
4. 2OHOH2 suggested sealing off the air intakes, I've never heard that but sounds good so nothing crawls in there either.
5. put gas stabilizer in the tank, and ride for like maybe 1/4 mile or so, so that it gets into the carbs and injectors and stuff to preserve any bits of gas elft i there.
6. putting the bike on stands to get the wheels off the ground because letting them sit will cause the tires to deform and the tires will go flat and you don't want the bike sitting on the rims. if you do leave it on the tires move the bike around so its not always on the same spot of the tires.
7. take the battery out and put it in a warm place with a battery tender on it. bike batteries don't have a cold crank amp rating so they aren't good at starting when cold.
8. clean it
9. actually do this one last as its also hard to do before the other stuff anyway, cover it.
sounds like a lot of stuff but its really not
I actually pulled my bike out of the storage place a bunch last year, me and a friend got in atleast one ride every month since we started riding spring of 03. A couple of shirts, the jacket with lining, 2 pairs of pants, warm gloves, keep that helmet closed and the most important thing to keep warm is actually a scarf. make sure you aren't bundled up so much that you can't move enough to ride because then there's no point. and watch all the sand, they went nuts with it hear last year.

| Re: Setting your bike up for winter Note:
Red Rider and those others who run redline in the coolant, get it out of there !!! It'll freeze. Last year I just drained my cooilng system and put a piece of tape over the ignition so I didn't forget to refill.
For those who run antifreeze, make sure it's at the right strength.
Anyone with carburetors, drain the float bowls or just run'em as dry as possible after the stabil goes in the tank.
I hate winter. |

Oh yah..I guess some of us do that, or use fogging oil
edit: for the stabil I toss on some skwid-wear after Im finally committed to storage, and ride to the gas station and top it off/put stabil in/ride home - on stands it goes. Battery comes inside and sits on a schumacher wannabe tender.
but on my 954 I did nothing as I rode it every now and then

| Re: Setting your bike up for winter does anybody overfill all their fluids for winter storage? The theory being that if all holes/crevices is filled with liquid, oxidation cannot start.
I think some car buffs suggest that for storing cars for more than 6 months.... |

| Re: Setting your bike up for winter ok, good timing for this post.
Is there a problem mixing water wetter and anti-freeze. My bike is full of water wetter and water now and it's almost freezing time. Can I drain half the water and then top off with strait coolant then drive around for a while to mix it all up? I don't want to drain the whole system because I ride often during the winter plus i'm too cheap to go buy fancy water again. |

I'd mix it, but test it to make sure there's sufficient antifreeze in there for those cold New England winters! I guess the proper mix of antifreeze is half antifreeze/half distilled water anyway? I've always just bought the Honda stuff which is premixed.
You'll have to get more Water Wetter for the next Grattan track day anyway, as you'll have to flush again to get rid of the antifreeze you'll be putting in this winter! |
