Like many of you, I have explored a good bit of this beautiful country aboard a motorcycle. Once in awhile we come across a place that imprints an image on our mind that is vivid enough to last through the winter season, and give us the vigor to set out again in the spring. I wanted to share a few such places, and encourage you to share yours in kind....
I happened upon this place quite by accident a few years ago. I was travelling on US340 out of Frederick, Maryland headed to Front Royal, Virginia. Once in Front Royal, I planned to run a few scenic miles of Skyline Drive before continuing on to my ultimate destination in Charlotte, North Carolina. My day had started very early in Aberdeen, Maryland, and I had opted to take US340 once I reached Frederick as a way to make some time...
It was still a bit foggy when I approached the state line, and I caught a glimpse of a wide river through the trees while passing by Knoxville, Maryland. Around the next bend was a large bridge, and I realized that I was approaching the Potomac river. The early morning sun had just come up over the hills, and was lighting up a magnificent spectacle through the mist. The bridge provides a stunning vantage point of the rocky riverbed, and looking out you can clearly see the confluence of the Potomac and Shenendoah rivers....breathtaking...
Once across the bridge, you dip into Virginia, and wind down alongside the river itself. You are in the trees again, and the temperature drops with the fog drifting off of the water. The road quickly takes you into West Virginia, and once again back onto a sun-washed bridge, this time crossing the Shenendoah. From this bridge, you can look back to see stunning views of the river and the point of land that is Harper's Ferry.....
The distance covered is only 2-3 miles, but the primitive beauty of the scene prompts your mind to ponder how large those distances were to the early inhabitants of the area....and then drift even farther to ponder the thousands, perhaps millions of years that it took nature to create this magnificent place....
I've returned since to explore the area in a bit more detail...and highly recommend a stop at the
Harper's Ferry National Historic Park...
