Is there a way to read an Engine ID number?

Does anyone know if there is a way to read an Engine Identification Number(EIN) like a Vehicle Identification Number(VIN) to verify that it is the original motor with the bike? By the way this is for a 929.

Thanks,

Mark

Re: Is there a way to read an Engine ID number?

I *believe* the frame serial number (located on the rightside of the steering head) and the engine serial number (located on the rightside of the upper crankcase) are the same VIN numbers. FYI, I've never actually checked this on my own bike though...

Edit: If the frame and engine numbers match than I would think it's safe to assume that the engine is original to the bike.
