Re: Tiered Liscensing, what do you think??

I think we all need to write our respective congressional representatives and petition for a comprehensive study on the subject. Let's get the bureaucratic ball rolling on this one ASAP... Better yet... Let's all write the AMA and see if they can get behind some kind of legislation to put restrictions on our sport (life). There are some folks in government that are looking for just this kind of foot hold on restricting motorcyclist's rights. This just could be the leg up they are waiting for, let's give them a hand... shall we??

When I was sixteen my Dad would have kicked my butt had I brought home a spanking new 1000RR.

Maybe that's one of the issues these days. That **** will get you thrown in jail. My old man took the belt to me more than once, and I freekin deserved it too.

My Dad never actually kicked my butt for anything... but, I was brought up to respect the fact that respect was required.

Edit: Now Mom and a nice hickory switch is a different story (when younger).

Yeah, my Mom was the one to watch out for. I think Dad was holding back so he wouldn't hurt anyone. Mom swung wooden cooking spoons for the fence. And I deserved every one she broke.

I'm glad mine didn't when I brought home a CB750 at sixteen. If he had, I may have never known the love of riding street bikes. Having said that, I would be all for a tiered program...it might help a few kids see their 17th birthday.

Oh, and Northern RR...please read this.

In 1977 I turned sixteen, I was focused on getting my drivers license.

My next goal was coaxing the 1968 Chevrolet Malibu out of my Dad's hands.

I was successful at both attempts... I saw no reason to push my luck.

Would you buy your sixteen or seventeen year old son a CBR1000RR?

Edit: I was among the guys that didn't get the new cars... but we came to realize newer wasn't necessarily better. Hell, a K... I wanted a triple!!!!

No. Hypocritical? Yes. The worry and angst over knowing the dangers he would face outweigh his interests. Sorry, but I'm a parent first...and hope to be a grandparent some day.

I disagree Red. I don't think that's being hypocritical at all.

It is when you consider the fact that I had a large bike at that age. I guess what my parents didn't know didn't hurt me.

I think we all feel the same Red. My daughter will be 22 next week, and if she pulled half the **** I did I would have chained her on till she got her old age pension.

Yeah, but let's be serious here. There is a BIG difference between a CB750 and a 1kRR.

Well, I guess I can't argue with that.

But if my son wanted a bike at 16, I'd damn sure rather have him on a slower and bulky machine rather than a lightweight rocket.

Way easier to wind up on your ass with the CB imho....it was heavy, fast and with shitty brakes and tires....

Good point, but they are BOTH too big for a 16 year old, imo...

As long as there are ignorant parents there will be dead squids.

There is no perfect system that will corral the idiots and reward the responsible.

My first street bike was a cb750"F" it was a great bike all kinds of power and enough of anything to get you in to trouble if needed...

I think(IMO) that it boils down to people(of any age) who are responsible/smart enough to behave on a bike and ride within their safe limits make the best street riders...if any one can figure out how to get the squids to stop giving us a bad name(them and stupid movies)...please do share...
